Mission

Pets Help The Heart Heal's primary purpose is charitable. Within that context, PHTHH provides coordinated programs to assist youth, especially foster kids and youth who are homeless, to deal with emotional, psychological, and physical challenges by using the human animal bond. Our outreach programs and support services, including life skills, pet therapy, counseling, and coping skills, assist underserved and less fortunate individuals. We provide educational opportunities for youth to explore careers in the animal industry through internships, tours, day camps, and shadow programs. PHTHH establishes and engages in any other outreach activities that further the nonprofit activities of the organization.

Program accomplishments

  • Life of Pets and Jr Vets is our premier program. Youth are able to experience the life of a veterinarian. Each educational station provides information on careers in animal industry, animal care, household toxins, common parasites, xray interpretation, and even what happens in surgery. Puppy love sessions are also provided. Dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds are available for bonding and unconditional love. In the Life of Pets and Junior Vets 82 youth attended the program hosted by Lakeside Animal Hospital and VCA South Dade.Participants engaged in educational stations including physical exams, bandaging, CPR, suture techniques, toxicology awareness, radiology, exotic animal education, and animal wellness activities. The program also incorporated entrepreneurship, pet nutrition, and career development discussions led by veterinary professionals and community partners. These events provided youth with direct exposure to careers in veterinary medicine, veterinary technology, and other animal industry professions. Zoetis sponsored the ice cream social and Idexx sponsored the hospitality room for parents and youth.
    Expenses $1,500 · grants $2,000
  • Reading with Pets: PHTHH promotes literacy by going to local organizations to read with toddlers, elementary, and high school youth. There are many benefits of reading with pets. For struggling readers, they gain confidence reading to our mascot, Max, an AKC registered sable and white collie. Our team served 329 youth in the five events provided. The Reading With Pets initiative promoted literacy, confidence, mindfulness, and emotional wellness through animal-assisted reading experiences. Youth participated in themed reading sessions, arts and crafts activities, mindfulness exercises, and positive social interactions centered around the human-animal bond. Holiday and seasonal literacy events were hosted in schools, libraries, and community organizations throughout the year. The Holiday Reading for Thanksgiving and Christmas are always a major hit. Reading with Pets is an in-demand program.
    Expenses $3,950 · grants $5,000
  • Thriving With Pets: Youth from ages 14 and up can participate in the Shadow Program. The youth volunteer their time to learn more about careers in the animal industry. During their time, they observed doctors, work with the assistant, and have sessions with the animals. We had 439 youth and 14 events of educational sessions, workshops, and field trips. Sessions allowed them to gain a better understanding of the human animal bond. They had the opportunity to learn how animals are used in therapy sessions, stress reduction activities, and our signature puppy love sessions. PHTHH continued its veterinary shadow and mentorship opportunities for middle school, high school, and college students interested in veterinary medicine and animal science careers. Students observed daily operations within veterinary hospitals and participated in guided educational experiences related to patient care, surgery, diagnostics, and animal wellness. The program also included mentorship, career guidance, and exposure to veterinary schools and industry professionals to help expand educational and career opportunities for participating youth. Community Outreach and Wellness Education PHTHH participated in community outreach events, educational presentations, and collaborative partnerships focused on youth empowerment, mental wellness, responsible pet ownership, and the importance of the human-animal bond. Programs emphasized compassion, emotional healing, leadership development, and increased awareness of opportunities within veterinary medicine and related fields. Through its programs and partnerships, Pets Help The Heart Heal, Inc. continued to positively impact youth and families by creating meaningful educational experiences that foster confidence, compassion, literacy, wellness, and career exploration.
