- Ocean Literacy / Waa as our classroom: Na Maka Onaona has extended our Huliia/Literacy component to focus on Ocean Literacy utilizing waa or canoes as our floating classroom. Waa maintenance and operation is a huge part of this program training crew to care for and operate a sailing canoe being safe and moving together. In collaboration with partnerships across the State of Hawaii, weve also supported Wa'a Kaulua Pae Kula, a program inspired by Hoakea: Mauka to Makai Navigating our Future which began as an outdoor learning lab to showcase aina and waa as powerful learning platforms in 2023-2024 in Windward and Leeward, Oahu. It has expanded to include professional learning opportunities for teachers and student programming during non-traditional school hours and to other districts in the state. Through hands-on learning stations, we aim to inspire students to embrace the Navigator Mindset and become the leaders, stewards, and critical thinkers who can navigate us into a better future. Each year, we visit every school on the island of Kauai, reaching almost every school-age child. In the past calendar year we have made 22 school visits reaching an approximate 9,000 students.Expenses $35,490 · revenue $69,600
