Program accomplishments

  • MYT'S FEBRUARY 2024 SUMMIT, ADVANCING SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS: BUILDING ACTION TOGETHER IN MAINE COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE LIFESPAN. THIS ENGAGEMENT WELCOMED MANY INDIVIDUALS AND WAS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE SMALL GROUPS OF LOCAL LEADERS FROM THE SAME COMMUNITIES ("COMMUNITY" AS DEFINED BY YOUR GROUP), AND ALLOWED INDIVIDUALS TO HEAR INSIGHTS FROM THOSE WHO DESIGNED THE GUIDE ALONG WITH OTHER LOCAL LEADERS WHO WISH TO USE IT. THE SUMMIT EXPLORED THE NEW MEMBERSHIP MODEL AND DISCUSS ALL OF THE EXCITING BENEFITS: NETWORKING, COLLABORATION, EVENT AND CONFERENCE DISCOUNTS, MEMBERS-ONLY RESOURCES AND CONTENT, EXCLUSIVE EVENTS, AND MORE. THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER WAS DR NADJA LOPEZ. DR. NADJA LOPEZ HAS DEDICATED HER CAREER TO TRANSLATING RESEARCH AND CLINICAL PRACTICE INTO ACCESSIBLE APPROACHES FOR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES TO PROMOTE YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH. SHE COMPLETED HER GRADUATE WORK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, FOLLOWED BY PRE- AND POST-DOCTORAL WORK AT BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, WHERE SHE WORKED UNTIL 2011. DR. LOPEZ PRESENTED HER INSIGHTFUL AND TIMELY TALK TITLED "THE STRATEGY IS YOU", FOCUSING ON THE URGENT NEED TO ADDRESS YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WAKE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE U.S. SURGEON GENERAL HAD DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH, AND DR. LOPEZ EXPLORED HOW A PUBLIC HEALTH APPROACH TO EMOTIONAL WELLNESS CAN FOSTER RESILIENCE IN STUDENTS. BY FOCUSING ON SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL COMPETENCIES IN ADULTS-TEACHERS, PARENTS, AND YOUTH-SERVING PROFESSIONALS, DR. LOPEZ OUTLINED HOW THEY CAN SERVE AS A CRUCIAL COMPASS IN CO-REGULATING AND SUPPORTING THE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF YOUTH. HER MODEL UNDERSCORES THE IMPORTANCE OF REFLECTIVE SELF-REGULATION IN CREATING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE, SAFE, AND ENGAGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.
