Mission
To make dance accessible and inclusive. MM's programs are designed to mirror this goal of inclusivity, and to promote access to dance performances and training programs in nontraditional venues.
Program accomplishments
- Movement Migration 2025 Program Service Accomplishments Summary. In 2025, Movement Migration delivered a robust array of dance-based programming reaching diverse populations across Charlotte and beyond. Movement Migration offered 169 dance classes to 415 participants in traditional and nontraditional dance studio settings, including recreation centers, adult daycare centers, schools, and a library. Movement Migration professional dance artists offered 8 performances to 7,882 audience members. With support from the Arts & Science Council's Culture Blocks Funding, we offered bi-weekly movement classes for senior citizens at the David B. Waymer Center, employing a team of instructors, assistants, and live musicians. These programs reached 95 senior citizens. From January to September, we offered biweekly dance and drum/movement classes for adults at Gracious Living Adult Day Care Center, supporting those with physical or cognitive disabilities, including individuals in memory care (Alzheimer's and Dementia), through consistent engagement with rhythm and movement. At this latter location, there are from 70 to 100 participants per session. As an approved Educational Provider through ASC, Movement Migration brought dance instruction to local schools, including Hopewell High School, West Charlotte High School, and Northwest School of the Arts High School, serving students through a combined total of four class sessions with about 31 students per class, a total of 93 students. Additionally, Movement Migration dance artists and student artists performed for 130 students at Reedy Creek Elementary School. For the first time in Movement Migration's history, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) invited the company to offer a day of professional development for Charlotte Mecklenburg 6-12th public school dance grade educators. A major highlight of 2025 was our collaboration with the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights, which provides forensic medical evaluations for individuals seeking asylum. The performance,'MOVEMENTS IN RESILIENCE,' at the Theatre at St. Jean's, included 31 artists and 125 audience members. It served as a fundraiser and tribute to asylum-seekers and immigrants in New York City and beyond. Beyond Charlotte, Movement Migration dance artists Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba and Dominique Willis were invited to a choreographic residency at New Ballet Ensemble in Memphis, TN, where they created two new works for the company's spring production. Movement Migration Artistic Director Kim Jones curated a dance festival for the National Maritime Museum in London to celebrate the reopening of the Ocean Court, the museum's largest indoor space. The festival, entitled "Rhythm! A Dance Celebration of the Ocean," took place at the museum on July 12 and included two works choreographed by Jones, impacting 6,607 audience members. Overall, Movement Migration's 2025 programming reflects our commitment to accessibility, intergenerational engagement, and cross-cultural dialogue, with measurable outcomes in community impact, artist employment, and creative innovation. _____________________________________________________________Expenses $63,892
