Mission
Hyperreal Film Club provides free and sliding scale film screenings for the community, opportunities for local filmmakers to screen their work to an appreciative audience, and a platform for film writers and podcasters to explore the wide world of cinema.
Program accomplishments
- Since July 2016, we've produced hundreds of screenings and welcomed nearly 50,000 guests at dozens of local venues. In September 2024, we opened our own venue in East Austin where we screen movies and local short films 5+ nights each week. Integral to our vision is radical affordability and radical canon-busting - bringing queer, racially diverse, and class-diverse films all into the same spaces and conversations.Expenses $193,325 · revenue $106,116
- We've presented work from more than 500 local filmmakers at our events.0
- We produce the Hyperreal Film Journal - a film criticism platform with more than fifty regular writers and a team of dedicated editors, all of whom write and work on a volunteer basis. The journal publishes new writing five days a week and is a go-to source for reliable, studied, entertaining film writing in Austin and around the country. Our writers are regularly accepted as accredited press at SXSW, TIFF, Sundance, and other top film festivals.0
