Program accomplishments

  • The Japan fair is a community event open to the public, free of charge. It is an exhibition that nurtures and promotes both traditional and modern Japanese culture arts and crats. Japan Fair 2024 was held at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, attracting over 25,000 visitors over two days. Japan Fair strives to showcase Japanese heritage while sharing current trends from modern Japan. The event aims to increase cultural awareness and bring together diverse communities in the Pacific Northwest, fostering open collaboration among many cultures and people. In 2024, Japan Fair featured 14 live performances on the main stage, including Taiko drumming, choral singing, martial arts demonstrations, a Kimono show, and a cosplay contest. The event hosted 80 exhibition booths staffed by local and international exhibitors. Visitors also enjoyed 10 free workshops and seminars, along with a kids' activity area. Japanese and Japanese American artists who promote uniquely traditional and modern arts and crafts that appeal to a broad audience are encouraged to participate. Artist participation is advertised both in Japan and the U.S., welcoming those whose passions reflect modern social statements, such as Sakura-Con or new kimono styles and fabrics from Kimono Art.

  • In October 2015, in Takahata of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, the program began with just one school and has since expanded to include 25 schools with thousands of students across Japan. The program offers classes in local communities for individuals interested in rediscovering the joy of learning, expanding their horizons, learning from experts in various fields, or simply making new friends and connections. Since all the schools are interconnected, both within and outside Japan, they facilitate cultural exchanges and international connections, fostering greater understanding and friendship between people in the United States and Japan. In 2024, Seattle Necchu presented a seminar at Japan Fair highlighting Wakayama Prefecture, showcasing its rich local culture and cuisine. The session was broadcast live from Japan.
