Mission
I Nui Ke Aho uses our traditional, double-hulled Hawaiian sailing canoe, Wanana Paoa, on the North Shore of Oahu to provide safety-focused educational programs on and about the canoe. We teach collaboration, the traditional navigator's mindset, pono (honorable and correct) decision-making, and voyaging to youth, families and community members. Our volunteers maintain and care for the canoe under the leadership of an experienced navigator and captain. Practicing mutual respect, they study and teach environmental awareness, Hawaiian cultural values, and the protection and perpetuation of natural and cultural resources through our voyaging canoe Wanana Paoa, Kahokuwelowelo Heiau and our home lands and waters. Mission: As a voyaging organization, we strive to grow a vibrant north shore community that understands, values and enriches its culture, place and people.
Program accomplishments
- In 2024, for I Nui Ke Aho's Waa (voyaging canoe) component of our non-profit, we hosted our Na Lei Hulu Waa program in the spring, hosting 103 participants to learn about wahi pana (special places) on the North Shore of Oahu, practicing kilo (observation of natural resources) and learning about the many factors that contribute to safe voyaging. The sites and activities for this program included: 1) celestial navigation at Kahokuwelowelo; 2) waa maintenance and sailing in Waialua Bay, using Wanana Paoa as a platform for learning; 3) water quality testing at Maeaea and Loko Ea with a marine biologist; 4) Beach clean up and seabird education at James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge USFWS; and 5) clearing a loi (paddy for growing kalo or taro). The participants reported a 90 percent increase in connection to place, an 85 percent increase in knowledge of cultural practices, an 85 percent increase in voyaging knowledge and practices and a 95 percent increased interest in caring for land and sea. In 2024 I Nui Ke Aho also hosted 15 community volunteer days to focus on waa maintenance and sailing. We had 484 participants volunteer more than 1237 hours of their time toward care for, learning about and sailing our canoe.Expenses $47,280 · grants $47,280
- In 2024, for the Education/Outreach program component, I Nui Ke Aho was happy to be able to host school groups and community members, sharing about voyaging, waa maintenance and sailing. The groups included Kupu's Environmental Education Leaders, the Nakupuna Foundation, Iolani School, Kamehameha Schools, Malama Loko Ea's Spring Break Program and the Hawaii Community Foundation. Their activities included sailing aboard Wanana Paoa, learning about navigation (kilo, star compass, traditional stories of special places on the North Shore of Oahu, waa maintenance, knot tying and lashing of the canoe (how the canoe is held together). We collaborated with other North Shore nonprofit organizations, sharing about each of our organizations. As usual, we came together to educate our community about the unique places in our section of Oahu and how we can better care for them. In 2024, we had the opportunity to host our funding partners and collaborate with other North Shore nonprofits. We value our partners and cherish our relationships with other organizations in our community, so that we may work together to create positive change on the North Shore of Oahu and hope that it permeates throughout the Hawaiian Island chain. Working and learning together is invaluable when it comes to perpetuating cultural values and making pono decisions for our community.Expenses $33,066 · grants $33,066
