Program accomplishments

  • Child Care EECRC has successfully implemented the Child Care Provider Capacity Building Project with a grant from Seeding Justice. This initiative has recruited and trained over 24 community members, with 8 establishing their own culturally specific child care centers, and 6 employed in these centers. The project has provided comprehensive support, including training, home assessments, licensing fees, furnishings and equipment, child care supplies, rent/mortgage assistance, and scholarships for low-income families.
    Expenses $197,221
  • 2025 Transportation safety ODOT The Community Transportation Safety project was implemented to improve transportation safety awareness among African immigrant and refugee communities in the Portland metro area. The initiative addressed barriers such as language access, limited familiarity with U.S. traffic laws, and the lack of culturally responsive safety education. Key focus areas included distracted driving, teen driver education, pedestrian and bicycle safety, public transit navigation, emergency preparedness, roadside safety, and child passenger safety. EECRC successfully delivered 11 multilingual workshops and participated in community outreach activities that reached 181 participants, exceeding the original target of 100 participants by 81%. Workshops were conducted in Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromo, and English to ensure accessibility and meaningful engagement. The organization also partnered with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), Everybody Bikes, Community Cycling Center, OHSU, Portland Fire & Rescue, DMV, and Portland Police Bureau to strengthen training quality and outreach efforts. A total of 227 pre- and post-surveys were completed, surpassing the project requirement by 127%. Survey findings demonstrated significant improvements in transportation safety knowledge, confidence, and behavior. Participants showed an average 41% increase in understanding traffic laws, safety rules, and transportation best practices. Areas with the greatest gains included child passenger safety, public transit navigation, bike maintenance, emergency preparedness, and distracted driving awareness. Participants also reported an average 85% increase in confidence navigating roadways as pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers. Many participants expressed that this was their first opportunity to receive transportation safety education in a culturally and linguistically appropriate format. Post-survey results further indicated that 89% of participants demonstrated improved understanding of transportation safety concepts, laws, and available resources. To support long-term impact, EECRC distributed 180 Transportation Wallets and 25 bicycles with safety gear to community members facing mobility barriers. The organization also developed 12 multilingual transportation safety videos and translated five key ODOT transportation safety resources to extend access to information beyond workshop settings. One of the projects major accomplishments was the African Leader Transportation Forum, which convened more than 10 African-led organizations and created opportunities for community leaders to engage directly with PBOT and ODOT staff. The forum increased awareness of transportation planning processes and strengthened community participation in transportation decision-making.

  • Regenerating Agriculture By PCEF 2024-2029 The projects long-term goals are to increase equitable access to fresh, healthy, and culturally appropriate foods; strengthen local food systems; create economic opportunities through community-based agriculture; and build community resilience in the face of climate and food security challenges. By combining regenerative farming practices with cultural knowledge and food justice principles, the project will empower community members, preserve agricultural traditions, and promote long-term environmental stewardship and sustainability.
