Mission
The Boon Project exists to combat the increased rates of isolation and depression in young adult cancer fighters and survivors, as well as to equip them with resources in their fight to help increase survival rates. The mission of the organization is to support young adult cancer fighters and their unique needs, through providing beneficial programs and creating a cooperative cancer fighting culture that works to heal the whole patient.
Program accomplishments
- Courage Club: Courage Club is made up of persons who have faced a cancer diagnosis as a young adult (roughly 18-40 years of age). We have a private online group, but also plan free in-person events at least monthly as an opportunity for those we serve to connect and support one another. Courage Club has a subgroup for those battling stage 4 cancer, which we call our "Meta Meet Up" group which gathers at least quarterly. A few of our favorite events this year included cookie decorating class, pottery painting, pumpkin carving with goats, candle making class, axe throwing happy hour, and bowling- all at no cost to those we serve. We partnered with a sex therapist to offer a free virtual "sex after cancer" workshop and partnered with a psychologist to host a "Coffee for Caregivers" session. We hosted several large family events for our courage club members this year including a RiverDogs minor league baseball game and our Holiday Party which included bowling, laser tag, arcade games, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.Expenses $13,803
- Fitness Force: Fitness Force is designed to help cancer survivors achieve their wellness goals after a cancer diagnosis. Volunteers act as supporters to encourage and provide accountability to our survivors. Through a grant from The Cooper River Bridge Run Foundation and in cooperation with a certified running coach, we were able to create custom training plans for our survivors to prepare for a 10k race. We met weekly for check ins and every few weeks for group workouts leading up to the race. We also provided all survivor participants with custom fit running shoes for training and race day. Approximately 20 members of our Fitness Force crossed the finish line of the 2025 Cooper River Bridge Run 10K in April. Fitness initiatives continued after the race in April through wellness challenges, free Pilates class, and group accountability towards post-cancer goals. Fitness Force has served as a great way for new survivors to connect with our organization and other survivors.Expenses $4,697 · grants $268
- Patient Support: Our patient support program provides financial, emotional, and mental health support for young adults fighting cancer. We offer financial assistance grants, access to free counseling services with a licensed therapist, support from a young adult cancer guide with a background in oncology nursing, as well as care packages called "Boon Bags" with cancer fighting resources. This year we've increased the presence of our Boon bags and resources to hospitals and patient care facilities by partnering with local providers, navigators, and social workers. We continue to focus on building relationships with people who serve our demographic. This year we were able to fulfill 100% of local eligible financial assistance grant requests. Our cancer guide has worked with patients to help them advocate for themselves and seek the best care plans for their situations. In a collaborative effort, our Executive Director attended the MUSC SCOR Survivor Symposium in Charleston in June as well as the Adolescent Young Adult Cancer Coalition Conference in Chapel Hill, NC in October. Both events allowed us to collaborate with others in the AYA community as well as to learn more about how we can meet the needs of those we serve. We've continued our conversations with our local hospital about the importance of programs geared towards our demographic and have advocated for AYA specific services to be offered through their adult and pediatric cancer centers. We believe community is healing and working to connect those we serve with other organizations who can provide them assistance is an important part of our mission and patient support program.Expenses $18,466 · grants $8,800
