Program accomplishments

  • Healthcare Career Bridge: Intensive English and Community Health Worker Transition Support. COCD provided six months of intensive, workforce aligned English instruction to 20 internationally trained healthcare professionals. After completing the intensive English phase, participants transitioned into a 15 week Community Health Worker certification program delivered by Ohio University. During the certification period, COCD continued providing English-language and academic support three days per week on days when participants were not attending CHW classes. This integrated approach strengthened professional English, health related vocabulary, communication skills, academic readiness, and ability to complete the certification pathway. Ohio University delivered the CHW certification instruction without charge to COCD. Of the 20 participants enrolled, 17 completed the CHW training requirements.
    Expenses $110,882
  • Urban Agriculture and Community Food Access Program. COCD operated an urban agroecology and community food access initiative that engaged immigrants, refugees, and other underserved Dayton residents in food production, gardening education, and community service. Program activities included garden preparation, planting, cultivation, participant education, site maintenance, and the distribution of locally grown produce to community residents and partner organizations. Through this work, COCD produced more than 870 pounds of fresh produce, including approximately 276 pounds distributed to St. Mary, 104 pounds to Good Neighbor House, and 160 pounds to East Dayton Fellowship. The initiative directly served 10 farmers and 20 English-language learners, benefiting an estimated 150 household members. Through its community partners, the program also contributed to a combined service network that reached approximately 2,964 people.
    Expenses $15,000
