  • Women's empowerment - We continued with the two Kolkata Foundation Initiatives launched in earlier years. The first is called Shahoshini (meaning Courageous Women in local language) and is geared towards helping women develop agency and decision making power over issues that affect their lives - like gender, discrimination and violence. The objective has been to train a cohort of women to address such issues and encourage them to disseminate their learning in their communities and to address these issues in their families, networks and villages. During the year a cohort of 22 Shahoshinis made more than 24,800 family visits. They conducted about 1,600 village level meetings to reach out to 6,950 unique women participants. The overall cumulative footfall across all meetings was more than 27,750 participants reflecting strong community participation. They also intervened in about 42 domestic violence, child abuse and related cases; among these 30 cases received positive responses and resolutions, while the rest remain ongoing for further follow-up and support. They also intervened in about 25 community level disputes and concerns, many of which were effectively resolved through dialogue, mediation and community based discussions. To strengthen communication and awareness generation, the program also launched a YouTube channel and a WhatsApp channel during the year. These platforms have been helping in spreading awareness, sharing life-changing stories, and strengthening community outreach efforts. So far, the YouTube channel has received 2,921 views and gained a total of 951 subscribers. The second Kolkata Foundation Initiative is called Swastho Shongini (meaning Health Partner in local language) and is geared towards improving healthcare, especially among rural children, adolescents and women, by training village women to become evangelists on health issues including hygiene and nutrition. During the year this team of 24 Swastho Shonginis continued to visit and interact with various families. In addition, they conducted 15 Village Level Medical Camps across various districts where visiting doctors treated more than 1,130 patients (70% women) and free medicines were distributed.
