Mission

The 369th Experience is an historic re-creation of the The 369th Infantry Regimental Band, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters. The 369th Infantry Regiment was comprised of African American and Puerto Rican soldiers in World War I. They went on to become one of the longest-serving, most decorated units of World War I. In addition to their bravery on the battlefield, these soldiers were brilliant musicians who introduced ragtime, big band and jazz to the warfront and the world. Our band is made up of 65 African American and Puerto Rican male students from HBCSs and other colleges and universities across the United States. Our program celebrates the Harlem Hellfighters's contribution to the music of the past and present with live and virtual performances saluting The 369th Regimental Band and its bandleader James Reese Europe.

Program accomplishments

  • During 2024, the 369th Experience, Student Band Members, and Band Directors rehearsed virtually and in person to make special appearances in Washington, DC, September 1-4, 2025. The significance of this opportunity cannot be overstated. This was a once-in-a-lifetime and nonpartisan event. Lt. Col. Dwayne S. Milburn (RET), Special Advisor and Guest conductor, worked along with Anthony S. Jones, The 369th Experience Band Director. These performances were sponsored in part by the Doughboy Foundation. Despite the 2021 Congressional Gold Medal Act that officially recognizes the Harlem Hellfighters, their story and the story of Lt. James Reese Europe remain largely unknown to many generations. While select museums display the Hellfighters' medals, universities archive their sheet music, and military institutions can document their combat achievements, none of these organizations can fully capture and transmit the groundbreaking musical innovations that James Reese Europe and his band brought to both military music and American jazz. This is where the 369th Experience Inc. plays an irreplaceable role by recreating the original 369th Infantry Regimental Band with young musicians with the musical background and skill to play Europe's intricate, syncopated rhythms. The Harlem Hellfighters were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor at the US Capitol. Four years after the Congressional Gold Medal Act (H.E. 3642) was signed into law, and more than 100 years after our heroic Black and Puerto Rican American men returned home from World War I, the posthumous award was presented in recognition of the 369th Infantry Regiment (aka Harlem Hellfighters) on September 3, 2025. Those performances included the National World War I Memorial, the French Embassy/La Maison Francaise and Emancipation Hall at the U. S. Capitol's official ceremony.
