Mission

After Innocence provides free re-entry assistance to individuals nationwide who have been released from prison after having been convicted of crimes they did not in fact commit, and advocates with them for a justice system that is more accountable for the consequences of wrongful conviction.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2024

Program accomplishments

  • Post-release assistance for people nationwide who have been released after wrongful imprisonment: Services include trauma-informed, one-on-one case management support to ensure exoneree-clients get, understand and make use of the healthcare -- including mental health treatment -- and social services they are eligible for in their communities. We coordinate programs that provide clients with pro bono financial counseling, tax filing, making wills and healthcare directives, peer support and free dental care. Technical assistance and advocacy to support the enactment of state statutes that provide a transparent process through which individuals who establish that they had been imprisoned for crimes they did not commit receive meaningful compensation and effective post-release support from the state.
    Expenses $324,202
