Mission

The Wasatch & District Pipe Band (WDPB) is a nonprofit, competitive organization based in Bountiful, Utah devoted to: 1) educating its members in Scottish bagpipes, drums, music, and dance, 2) providing a significant contribution to the arts in Utah, and 3) promoting a positive Scottish heritage and culture throughout our community and the Western United States. Our events include concerts, special performances, memorials, parades and pipe band competitions.

Program accomplishments

  • Instruction: 1) As a traditional Scottish bagpipe band, our primary goal is to instruct others on the history, theory, and practice of the Great Highland Bagpipe and Scottish marching drums (snare, tenor, and bass). We do this through small group and private instruction as well as bringing a teaching element to each of our performances. Through instruction of these instruments we are able to not only prolong the life of this art form, but also ensure a more cultural vibrant community. 2) Our primary audience for instruction is youth aged 8-18, and adults aged 19-70, with a desire to learn more about Scottish instruments, culture, or history. While we do not limit who we instruct, most people interested in learning to play Scottish instruments have European ancestry.
    Expenses $6,367
  • Performance: 1) Our second major program is performance. Performance provides those we instruct with an opportunity to practice what they are learning while providing a service to their community. Through performance we are able to expand our instruction beyond those who are learning to play instruments to also instruct community members on the history and culture of Scotland. Performance allows us to connect with our community, give back to those who serve our community (law enforcement, fire fighters, and other public officers), and bring joy in times of sorrow. 2) Our audience for our performances is pretty unlimited. Some of our performances allow us to perform for those who would not otherwise seek out bagpipe music, like when we perform with The Piano Guys. Other times we perform for those who are seeking out all types of world music, like at the Salt Lake Living Traditions Festival. When we march in parades, our audience is an entire community, and when we host our own concert, our audience is those who seek out bagpipe music.
    Expenses $2,228
  • Competition: 1) Our final major program is competition. Most people who see us perform have no idea that bagpipes are a competitive art form. Our bands compete 2-5 times each year and we encourage our band members to compete as soloists. Although winning competitions does have a financial incentive, as an organization, our goal in competing is to use it as a means for improvement. At each competition we receive a critique from the judges that helps us know how we as a band can improve our musical performances. This pushes us to improve our rehearsal, instruction, performance, and competition. 2) Our audience for this program is limited to the musicians who perform and compete with us. Because of the critique we receive from the judges, each of our musicians benefit individually from our competition
    Expenses $78,956
