Mission

The San Francisco Pride Band provides for the education and musical development of its members, promotes visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, and with its allies, fosters understanding among diverse communities through public performance.Beyond the formal mission statement, the spirit of SFPB is best captured in the revised lyrics written by founder Jon Sims to a popular Broadway song:If they could see me now, that little home-town clan we're singing and we're playing with this all-gay band.I'd like for all the world to see for a factthat we're a source of power they'll never send back! The closet's empty now, just like it ought to be--the time is right for us, just look around and see! What a set-up, Holy Cow! (They'd never believe it.)If my friends could see me now.If My Friends Could See Me Now (New lyrics by Jon Sims, 1978)

Program accomplishments

  • During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the San Francisco Pride Band continued uplifting San Francisco's diverse LGBTQ+ communities through inclusive and accessible musical programming. We produced Community Concerts in the spring and fall that included world premiere performances, and presented the Dance-Along Nutcracker "Mission: Nutcracker" in December. The Marching Band performed in parades across the Bay Area, and the Pep Band brought music and LGBTQ+ visibility to over 30 events. This was a year of transition for the organization, as we adopted a new name to reflect the organization's mission of representing the entire LGBTQ+ community. In addition, Pete Nowlen, our Concert Band Artistic Director retired after 12 years of service. We concluded the concert band season with a farewell concert to Pete, and initiated a recruitment and selection process for the Concert Band's next Artistic Director.
