Mission

INCREASED PUBLIC AWARENESS OF SACROPENIA CACHEXIA AND WASTING DISORDER THROUGTH THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2024

Program accomplishments

  • IN 2024, THE SOCIETY FOR CACHEXIA, WASTING, AND SARCOPENIA DISORDERS (SCWD) CONTINUED ITS IMPACTFUL INITIATIVES, NOTABLY THROUGH ITS 17TH CACHEXIA CONFERENCE HELD IN WASHINGTON. THE EVENT BROUGHT TOGETHER 340 PARTICIPANTS FROM 27 COUNTRIES, FEATURING 166 POSTER ABSTRACTS. THIS CONFERENCE MARKED SIGNIFICANT INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION, WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE USA, GERMANY, AND THE UK LEADING THE WAY IN POSTER SUBMISSIONS.
    Expenses $326,912 · revenue $168,500
  • IN 2024, SCWD SUPPORTED A PIVOTAL STUDY CONDUCTED IN FRANCE ON THE PREVALENCE OF CANCER CACHEXIA, WHICH WAS FOUND TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY UNDERESTIMATED IN MEDICAL RECORDS. THE RESEARCH, CONDUCTED AT THE ROUEN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, USED A CLINICAL DATA WAREHOUSE TO ANALYZE BOTH STRUCTURED (ICD CODES) AND UNSTRUCTURED (CLINICAL NARRATIVES) DATA FROM 2018-2023. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT MANY CASES OF CANCER CACHEXIA WERE EITHER NOT DIAGNOSED OR MISCLASSIFIED DUE TO INCOMPLETE OR INACCURATE DOCUMENTATION, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO WEIGHT LOSS DATA. AMONG PATIENTS WITH HIGH-PREVALENCE CACHEXIA CANCERS LIKE COLORECTAL, PANCREATIC, AND LUNG CANCERS, THE PREVALENCE WAS FOUND TO BE 29.3%, MUCH HIGHER THAN THE 3.66% IDENTIFIED BY ICD CODING ALONE. THE FINDINGS UNDERSCORE THE NEED FOR IMPROVED AWARENESS AND CODING PRACTICES, AS ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR TIMELY INTERVENTIONS AND CLINICAL TRIALS
    Expenses $69,468
  • SCWD STRENGTHENED ITS ACADEMIC PRESENCE THROUGH THE JOURNAL OF CACHEXIA, SARCOPENIA, AND MUSCLE (JCSM), WITH THE JOURNAL CONTINUING TO BE A PROMINENT PLATFORM FOR HIGH-QUALITY RESEARCH IN THE FIELD, WITH A 9.4 IMPACT FACTOR IN 2023. ADDITIONALLY, THE SOCIETY EXPANDED ITS MEMBERSHIP, REACHING 86 PAYING MEMBERS BY THE END OF THE YEAR, FURTHER ADVANCING ITS MISSION TO FOSTER COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION IN THE FIELD OF CACHEXIA AND RELATED DISORDERS.
    Expenses $12,259
