Mission
THE SOCIETY WAS FORMED TO ENCOURAGE THE STUDY OF BREAST SURGERY, TO PROMOTE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED SURGICAL TECHNIQUES, TO IMPROVE STANDARDS OF PRACTICE FOR BREAST SURGERY IN THE UNITED STATES, AND SERVE AS A FORUM FOR THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS.
Program accomplishments
- ANNUAL MEETING: THE SOCIETY HOLDS AN ANNUAL MEETING TO PROVIDE CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR SURGEONS WHO TREAT BREAST DISEASE. THIS FIVE-DAY EVENT OFFERS SURGEONS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR HANDS-ON TRAINING IN THE LATEST TECHNIQUES. THERE ARE PRESENTATIONS BY EXPERTS AND SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS HIGHLIGHTING ADVANCES IN RESEARCH. THE MEETING SERVES AS A FORUM FOR MEMBERS TO EXCHANGE IDEAS AND GAIN EXPOSURE TO NEW TECHNOLOGIES.
- CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION: THE SOCIETY OFFERS CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION IN BREAST ULTRASOUND AND STEREOTACTIC BREAST BIOPSY PROCEDURES. CERTIFICATION DEMONSTRATES AN INDIVIDUAL SURGEON'S DEDICATION TO QUALITY PATIENT CARE AND PUBLIC SAFETY THROUGH ADHERENCE TO ESTABLISHED STANDARDS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THESE PROCEDURES. THE PROGRAM OFFERS A MEANS OF RECOGNITION TO INDIVIDUAL SURGEONS WHO MEET CRITERIA IN THE AREAS OF CLINICAL EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND QUALITY ASSURANCE. ACCREDITATION IS DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT FACILITIES HAVE MET THE APPLICABLE REQUIREMENTS REGARDING PERSONNEL (PHYSICIANS, ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGISTS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, AND NURSES), EQUIPMENT, QUALITY CONTROL AND QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMS, AND ACCURACY OF EXAMINATIONS AND PROCEDURES BEING PERFORMED.
- MEMBERSHIP SERVICES: THE SOCIETY OFFERS FOUR CATEGORIES OF MEMBERSHIP AS WELL AS A SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY FOR PATIENT ADVOCATES. MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY STAY INFORMED WITH THE MOST UP-TO-DATE RESOURCES, MEDICAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AND VALUABLE PRACTICE-ENHANCING TOOLS.
