Mission
The Wounded Warrior Umpire Academys mission is to provide instruction training placement and peer to peer support for military veterans interested in baseball.
Program accomplishments
- WWUA 2024: Our initial membership course. This is a 10-day camp and was held in Carlisle Pennsylvania. We welcomed 21 new members 3 returning Alumni and 30 staff and volunteers. This course teaches the initial instruction of baseball umpiring while providing all necessary equipment training manuals and experience necessary to reconnect to their local communities and work as an umpire. The camp provides a renewed sense of purpose and belonging while also developing a peer to peer support network to achieve deeper connections between Veterans struggling with transition or disabilities. Cost per participant is approximately $3500 each and includes lodging airfare and meals. To date we have trained 186 veterans.Expenses $95,077
- LEGACY CAMP 2024: This was the second year we were able to bring our Alumni AND a one of their Family Members to Daytona Beach Florida for umpire training together! In an effort to build bonds which may have been weakened from military service at the Legacy Camp we trained 7 Alumni and Family member pairs for a total of 14 participants. This camp builds stronger family bonds and allows for our Alumni to work on the diamond with their family member in a combined love for the game. Cost per participant is $1000 for the Family Member and for the Alumni.Expenses $7,000
- BSL 2024 2025: The Baseball Scouting League came to Daytona Beach to scout players for professional baseball. Our veterans came to town to umpire these mock games to allow the players to showcase their talents. After a day of scouting our veterans enjoyed time for peer to peer support either pool side a the beach or our for a meal. BSL held scouting events in December and March. WWUA provided 20 umpires for these two events. Cost per umpire was $200.Expenses $4,000
- ST. LOUIS 2024: We were unable to come together for our normal Veterans Day baseball tournament in Tuscon so we set up a camping trip for our veterans to get together and get in their peer to peer support time. We welcomed 10 veterans on this cold endeavor and enjoyed some light hiking tent camping camp fire conversation and field expedient meals. Cost per participant was $200.Expenses $2,000
- MLB Event 2024: This partnership with UmpsCare Charities allows our Alumni and their families to attend MLB Baseball games across the country sponsored by the MLB Umpires working their games.
