- At 23, Sandoval used jokes about his weight as a catalyst for teaming with the American Heart Association to urge kids to stay healthy. He spoke in his native language to elementary-school-age kids at San Franciscos predominantly Hispanic Mission Cultural Center in the summer of 2010. This past season, after losing 40 pounds, Sandoval made a similar appearance with his brother and training partner Michael at St. Peter School, to the delight of Vice Principal Mercy Sister Marian Rose Power. In todays world our children need heroes and heroines to look for inspiration, she told Catholic-SF.org. Pablo and his brother did this for the children and families at St. Peters. The teachers will follow up with lessons on nutrition and exercise so it will be far more than a one-day event. When Pablo played for the Class A San Jose Giants, he lived with host family Donna and Ed Musgrave and grew close to them as they helped him adapt to a new country, culture and language. Donnas subsequent battle with bladder cancer galvanized Sandoval to do what he could to stand up for her and stand up to cancer. In October of 2010, Sandoval joined fellow World Series players in signing The Wall for Stand Up To Cancer, naming his baseball mom Donna. Its exciting to know that MLB does those things to help others, he told MLB.com. We need to give support to make good things happen. In 2013, an MLB public service announcement featuring Pablo and Dustin Pedroia introducing Stand Up to Cancers new app aired during the World Series, and Sandoval held up his phone, with the app saying My Friend Donna. In 2011, the FBI honored Sandoval for partnering with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)/FBI National ID Program to provide 50,000 Child ID (fingerprinting) Kits to children in the San Francisco community. Pablo is a professional athlete who understands the importance of investing back in the community that supports you, and 50,000 children in San Francisco will be safer due to his efforts, said Kenny Hansmire, the AFCA/FBI National Child ID Program executive director. Sandoval also furnished kits for families in Venezuela.Time with Pablo has become a popular request for children participating in Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, and he has hosted numerous Wish Kids and their families for visits to AT&T Park. During a visit to Baseball City in Scottsdale, Arizona, he took part in a free clinic for kids and also spent time with kids from that Make-A-Wish chapter.Sandoval was named as a Guest Judge for MLBs Honorary Bat Girl program for 2014 recognizing fans who have been affected by breast cancer and worked to eradicated it, raising the profile of the PINK initiative. He met with the San Francisco Giants Bat Girl before a game and escorted her to the field for the first pitch.Sandoval wears the bracelet for Until Theres A Cure, raising funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS.Pablo has spent numerous hours visiting with injured U.S. troops to lift their spirits and boost morale, in hopes of aiding in their recovery process.Sandoval has initiated Twitter and Facebook takeovers of official team media sites to interact with fans and answer their questions. He loves social media as a way of connecting with fans, and stays active on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.Pablo has made several visits to sick kids, and a special program at UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital in August 2013 marked the official introduction of his Pablo Sandoval Family Foundation. Pablo visited with 50 children and their families in the playroom, and then was escorted for one-on-one time with the children too sick to leave their beds. The Giants shared video footage that night with fans at a sold-out game. I just want to see those kids happy, he said that day.His foundation since has hosted 25 school children at a spring training game, and on June 1, 2014, a partnership with the San Francisco Giants Community Fund and MLB launched Win a Day with the Panda, the Ultimate Pablo Sandoval Giants Experience. Pablo donated all of the raffle proceeds to the Junior Giants and their RBI program.During the 2014 World Series, one small gesture informed the world of the big heart of Pablo Sandoval. The Royals seven-run bottom of the second inning of Game 6 lasted 33 minutes as Kansas City went to work on a lopsided victory. When it finally ended with a foul ball into the glove of Sandoval, he handed it over the railing to a kid. A kid clad in Royals blue. The cameras caught the moment, and there was a bit of a buzz on the internet as baseball fans commented on the generosity of Sandoval even in the heat of the moment.Fans in the Bay Area and Venezuela merely shrugged. They had already seen the big heart of the Panda.
