Program accomplishments

  • In the summer of 2025, we provided a 12-week college and career readiness program designed to prepare 27 middle and high school students for life after high school. The program focused on career exploration, post-secondary pathways, financial literacy, leadership development, and essential life skills needed for long-term success. Breakfast and lunch were provided daily to support student participation and wellness throughout the program. Participants attended workshops held for two hours each day and engaged in activities that promoted self-discovery, career exploration, and real-world financial literacy. Students identified their strengths, interests, and goals while learning about career pathways, educational requirements, and workplace expectations. Hands-on activities included FAFSA reviews, scholarship research, financial aid simulations, budgeting exercises, and college cost comparisons involving tuition, fees, housing, transportation, and campus location. The program featured guest speakers from the fields of public safety, the military, public policy, and higher education. A lieutenant discussed firefighting, leadership, and emergency services careers. Military personnel shared information about military career pathways, training opportunities, and educational benefits. A Senior Policy Advisor from the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection spoke about policymaking and public service careers. Additional workshops focused on college readiness, overcoming self-sabotage, and building self-confidence. Students also participated in college field trips to the University of Connecticut, Trinity College, Capital Community College, and Morgan State University. These visits exposed students to different college environments, cultures, and academic opportunities while helping them better understand post-secondary expectations. Through workshops, guest speaker engagements, field trips, and team-building activities, students gained confidence, leadership skills, financial literacy, and greater awareness of career and educational opportunities. All 27 students maintained at least 80 percent attendance and successfully completed the 12-week program.

This experience built self-awareness, cultural competency, and critical thinking through enrichment activities. At the finale, participants experienced sisterhood, encouragement, and mutual support. They saw how uplifting one another strengthens confidence, promotes leadership, and supports personal growth.
