Mission
The August Quarterly commemorates and celebrates the significant historical perspectives of our nation in general and the African American experience in particular. It educates participants on a variety of American freedom movements, including, but not limited to, the Underground Railroad, the August Quarterly, the Abolitionist Movement, and other revered freedom movements. The vision of the August Quarterly Festival Committee is to become a center for cultural activities and programs that reinforce a sense of belonging and pride within the African American community for youth, for families, and for senior citizens. To educate the nation in the history and significance of the oldest African American festival in the United States. To relate and recognize the connection between the Underground Railroad and its contribution to the freedom and independence of African Americans.
Program accomplishments
- In 2025, Wilmington, Delaware hosted a two-day festival. We are commemorating the legacy of the Big Quarterly and the Peter Spencer's values for 211 years. The first day's programming was tailored to the needs of children and young people. Day two is the customary celebration, which includes food, vending, a children's area, and choirs from local and regional churches. We also had a health pavilion where doctors and community organizations offered free health-related services and information. All events are free and open to the public.
