Program accomplishments
- Our comprehensive coaching programs for lower-income families cultivate self-respect as they impart actionable guidance towards healthier life styles. Participants self-discover personalized plans for enhanced physical and financial health. We believe that sustaining change requires repeated engagement within a comprehensive ecosystem covering food/health, financial vulnerability, and time/stress management. Our organization is embedded in the communities where we work through partnerships with community centers, schools, and health clinics. We have rapidly gained recognition and support in these communities owing to our novel and inclusive approach and collaborative spirit. We currently offer 4 distinct, yet interconnected programs:Healthy Lifestyle Program (HLP)- Our Healthy Lifestyle Coaching was designed in collaboration with participants and community leaders to habituate more healthful behaviors. HLPs novel eight-week curriculum addresses food and health, responsible household finance, and time/stress management, all within a framework that is intuitive and accessible. Experiential learning is combined with weekly take-home projects, and every session ends with a group dinner at which participants share experiences and provide mutual reassurances. Invariably behaviors change, in ways that vary across families with their circumstancesthere is an exciting level of self-discovery that we celebrate with weekly rewards. Healthy Lifestyle Program for Diabetes (HLPD)- Building on the success of our HLP, we have introduced a more focused HLPD that is showing remarkable success with families facing the challenging circumstances of type-2 diabetes.Expenses $28,000
- Specialized workshops on food, health and household finances serve as entry points for families into our programs as they set out on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. They also provide continuing enrichment to past program participants and facilitate repeated with families in our communities.
- Youth Wellness and Leadership: This program offers a novel, integrated youth-to-adult experience that significantly enhances the lifestyles of participating families. There are four central ingredients in 1000 Grains' YWL: (i) the "contract course" YWLC in which 3rd and 4th graders in local youth centers' after school programs (Elementary 6-10) participate in fifteen-week long courses on food/health/leadership; (ii) a dedicated YWL garden that is being maintained by the youth enrollees in YWLC and is providing fresh produce for the classroom sessions; (iii) mentoring of the high-school coaches (High School 15-18) serving as facilitators in the classroom for YWLC; and (iv) participation of the parents (Adults 24-64) of the children enrolled in YWLC in 1000 Grains' eight-week Health Lifestyle Coaching program. Each session of the Contract Course YWLC highlights food safety, and a key component of a healthy lifestyle (balanced plates, understanding food labels, the cycle of life of fresh vegetables, healthy snacks, etc). The youths prepare recipes designed to complement the themes of each lesson plan, and they are encouraged to share these recipes with their families. Equally importantly, each session develops social/emotional skills through the group activities of growing food and cooking and eating together. Our curriculum is designed to promote leadership skills and effort-based praising, within a growth mindset. It creates opportunities for youth to feel validated by their successes, learn organizational skills, and experience the joy of experimentation. The YWLC experiences are structured to raise youths' interests in science.Expenses $2,400
