  • 2. Village Connector Experience and AdvocacyThe Village Connector Experience (VCE) is a national program of structured outreach calls to 60 older adults in 22 different states including Puerto Rico. There is no charge for the program. Calls are provided by trained volunteers (certified Ambassadors from the Chattanooga Tennessee Urban League Senior Community Service Employment Program) which receive 16 hours of training from the Founder and CEO of the Juanita C. Grant Foundation. Outreach efforts intensified this year to help older adults build new interests, connect with younger people and maintain current social connections. We have incorporated the importance of co-generational social connectedness as part of the Juanita C. Grant Foundations overall advocacy efforts. The end result of older adults being actively involved with their friends, younger people and family members helps strengthen the entire community. Friends can intervene when needed and families can provide extended support through life changes. We continue advocating through our one on one conversations with elected officials. We give voice to older adults through presentations at conferences and small group sessions. We advocate at each of our training sessions presenting data and first hand testimonies on the benefits of life long career training opportunities, safe spaces for leisure, affordable housing and accessible healthcare for older adults. Data from the last four year of the Village Connector Experience program indicates:VCE members receiving 3 calls per week for 6-9 months moved from the lowest level of social connectedness (level 1) to the highest level of (level 3). Members were able to reconnect with estranged family members, regain access to public transportation and became active in the community. These members maintained level 3 for 80% of 2 years in the program. VCE members starting at the level 2-3 receiving 3 calls per week were able to reduce call frequency within 90 days and maintained calls 1times per week for 1 year gradually tapering to once per month for 6 months.VCE members starting at level 1, receiving 1-2 calls per week hovered between levels 1 and 2 the duration of their membership. These individuals had significant health issues requiring frequent hospitalizations due to falls or health complications such as dementia, stroke, and lack of mobility.Due to the nature of the VCE, members were often loss to admission to a nursing home, dementia and
