Mission

DC Legendary Musicians, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the cultural and historical legacy of African American musicians in Washington, DC. Through humanities-based programming-including oral history, live performance, arts education, and public events-we promote historical awareness, cultural pride, and community engagement. Our work ensures that the contributions of Black musicians are documented, honored, and accessible to current and future generations.

Program accomplishments

  • In 2024, DC Legendary Musicians, Inc. successfully produced a series of live community performances honoring DC's Black musical legacy, reaching over 1,500 residents across all eight Wards. We launched the preview event for our 2025 signature initiative, Black, Beautiful and Banned in the Band, featuring a tribute to legendary saxophonist Ron Holloway. These performances were paired with storytelling and cultural education, reinforcing our commitment to blending music with historical context. We also deepened community partnerships, expanded our reach through livestreaming and social media, and engaged local youth and elders in intergenerational dialogue through music. These accomplishments reflect our dedication to preserving cultural history, uplifting Black artistry, and delivering accessible humanities programming citywide.
