Program accomplishments

  • Events; The CMC led more than 50 hikes in 2023, including the Lark in the Park, a 10-day series of events in October to celebrate the Catskill Park. An estimated 250 people participated in these events. CMC's annual dinner reached capacity at 75 people and included the Club's issuance of numerous hiking-challenge certificates for those who completed one or more of the Club's hiking challenge requirements. The Club held a mini-golf benefit in June which raised resources to support CMC programming.
  • Trails; Since its inception, CMC has built six hiking trails (totalling about 12 miles), and in 2023 an estimated 3200 people hiked these trails. Because a percentage of people do not sign in at the trail register books, a more precise estimate cannot be established. In addition to the CMC trails, CMC volunteers helped reopen a state-forest trail of 5.5 miles. The State of New York has not yet placed a register at the two access points so the number of users cannot be established at this time.
  • Advocacy; CMC is an active, key member of a 25-organization consortium that meets with state elected representatives each spring and has successfully brought resources to the region we serve and to those who recreate in the region's outdoors, including our 350+ members. Our combined advocacy efforts have: initiated a stewardship and education program a high-intensity trail access points and on mountain summits; funded scientifically-based programs to prevent, combat, and manage invasive species; and set forth plans to increase and connect the region's trail system to disperse and absorb increasing numbers of visitors that have come to the region, especially since the Covid pandemic. CMC is also a member of the Catskill Park Advisory Committee that helps influence policy of land managers and government agencies to target needs for the region's outdoor recreation resources. CMC is also a member of the Forest Preserve Group that specifically advocates for resources to better serve the two (Catskill and Adirondack) Forest Preserves and visitor. The efforts of this group have also proven successful, with specialized visitor-management efforts underway in both forest preserves.
    Expenses $12,500 · grants $12,500
  • Communications; CMC developed and delivered several electronic newsletters to its 2000 + subscribers in 2023. Numerous Facebook and Instagram posts were also issued. CMC also publishes and manages a second Facebook page, Catskills All Trails, which serves as a discussion forum for those interested in and hiking to complete the CMC's Catskills All Trails Challenge. The Club's Facebook page has 5.1K followers, while the All Trails Facebook page has 2.2K followers. CMC's executive director wrote a weekly outdoor column that was published for 11 months in two regional newspapers in 2023. In 2023 the Club undertook a project to completely replace and revise its website. A county tourism grant supported this effort ($5000). The result is a modern, user-friendly website and management platform. In addition to its well-structured content and suitability for all devices, the website supports merchandise sales and inventory and synchs with the finance system Stripe, which itself is compatible with other programs, including Constant Contact and Join It, both of which the Club instituted in 2023.
