Mission
The primary exempt purpose of the Center for Sustainable Communities is to provide project management, research, and technical assistance to help redevelop communities, particularly those that have been historically marginalized or disproportionately affected by climate change. We partner with residents to conduct community-based participatory research (CBPR), identify local climate priorities, and co-develop targeted strategies to reduce disproportionate climate impacts.
Program accomplishments
- We are completing the Community Coastal Resilience Project in collaboration with Nasa Langely Research Center, Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, Old Dominion University, and six municipalities across the Hampton Roads Region. For the project, the team is modeling and analyzing data for coastal flooding and storm surge impact on sea-level rise. Our role is to engage community members on sea-level rise and coastal flooding impacts. Mays High School, Carver High School, Maynard Jackson High School, Frederick Douglass High School, and Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School.
