Mission

Picture Book on Parade promotes love, literacy, and diverse local authors by hosting storytellers and their books in nontraditional places. We reach those who might not be comfortable in or have access to traditional literary settings. By bringing pages to the people, we meet families while they're out living their everyday lives. We platform the work of BIPOC artists and those from under-recognized communities, helping ensure all children see themselves in books and book creators. Our exhibits build cultural pride and identity for readers who rarely see their traditions and languages featured in mainstream media. Others learn about their neighbors and our region in a way that's truthful, honoring, and respectful. Our ultimate goal is to develop new readers; support Minnesota artists; and make sure all children see themselves, their families, and their cultures in books.

Program accomplishments

  • We create our exhibits by reprinting entire picture books (with publisher and artist permission) onto outdoor yard signs or indoor arts-quality panels. Featured artists conduct story times and meet-and-greets. Whenever possible, we purchase copies of their books for signing and giveaway. This supports the careers of BIPOC artists, encourages interaction between artists and families, and sparks children's interest in books and storytelling. We host storytelling exhibits and events at the Midtown Farmers Market, MSP Airport, Mall of America, Children's Minnesota, Rondo Days, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Flint Hills Family Festival, Walk for Wishes, Midwest Black Book Festival, and other venues. Afterward, we give the displays to the artists for use at their own events, expanding the reach of the exhibits. We also pay stipends to all artists involved. These stipends help support artists' income and recognize the value and legitimacy of their work.We survey artists at our events; nearly all say their experience has positively impacted them and their careers. More than 95 percent of respondents to our visitor survey rate our events a positive experience. Picture Book on Parade also has received recognition from Publishers Weekly and MPR Radio.Much of the evidence of our success is anecdotal. We've talked with previously underrecognized artists who say the opportunity to share their work has encouraged them and boosted their careers. We've watched children's faces light up as they've seen books inscribed with their names and signed right in front of them by a real author or illustrator. And we've seen children from a diversity of cultures meet - often for the first time - an artist who looks like they do.
