Program accomplishments

  • IN 2025, ASPEN ELEVATION INSTITUTE (AEI) ADVANCED THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH INITIATIVE DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF ADAPTIVE SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING FOR VETERANS AND OTHERS AFFECTED BY TRAUMA. GROUNDED IN EMERGING NEUROSCIENCE AND THERAPEUTIC RECREATION RESEARCH, AEI SELECTED SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING AS ITS CORE THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES BECAUSE OF THEIR UNIQUE ABILITY TO PROMOTE ENGAGEMENT, RESILIENCE, SOCIAL CONNECTION, AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. DURING THE YEAR, THE ORGANIZATION DEVELOPED STUDY PROTOCOLS, ESTABLISHED ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGIES, AND PREPARED FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF A PILOT STUDY THAT WILL EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARTICIPATION IN AN INTENSIVE ADAPTIVE WINTER SPORTS PROGRAM AND CHANGES IN POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYMPTOMS, EMOTIONAL REGULATION, AND NEUROCOGNITIVE FUNCTIONING. THE PILOT STUDY IS INTENDED TO ASSESS PROGRAM FEASIBILITY AND IDENTIFY PRELIMINARY THERAPEUTIC OUTCOMES THAT WILL INFORM FUTURE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND LARGER-SCALE CLINICAL RESEARCH EFFORTS.
