Program accomplishments

  • The national mental health project in El Salvador for people living with psychosocial disabilities and family caregivers (run by our partner ACISAM) has provided education, support, empowerment training and recreational activities since 2002. As of 2024, training of people with lived experience, family caregivers of people with mental illness, police officers, health workers, social workers and other community leaders has been an important component to this program, which has served over 1200 individuals, including 12 groups around El Salvador and assistance to groups in other Central American countries. Over 400 families have completed the 4 month educational program to learn about mental illness, self-care, and how to manage their loved one with serious mental illness. Randomized controlled studies in the U.S. have shown a similar program to result in reduced burden and stress, and improved compliance, communication, and self-efficacy. Advocacy is an important goal of the program: to improve services, voluntary participation, and government funding for mental health programs across the country, as well as to involve persons with mental illnesses in human rights commissions and reform efforts at the national level. We have carried out 2 qualitative studies that show benefits from the project's different components. In 2013 we carried out a qualitative study, and in 2015-2016 a quasi-experimental study to better understand the program, its impacts, and ways to improve it. Results demonstrated that the longer people participated in the program, the greater their gains in leadership development, empowerment, social capital, and other measures. In 2017 studies were developed and presented on access to medications and decentralization of mental health services in El Salvador. From 2022 through 2024 we carried out a research project seeking to identify the types of abuses and harms suffered by people with psychosocial disabilities in the country.
    grants $30,000
  • Since 2019 we have carried out research in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala related to understanding the severity and types of stigma and abuses suffered by people with psychosocial disabilities across society, including by family members, employers, neighbors, gang members, law enforcement officers, in jails and prisons, and in psychiatric and health treatment facilities. When we can, we publish reports on open source networks such as ResearchGate. In 2019 and 2024 we did research in Honduras. In 2022-2024 we did research in El Salvador. In 2025 we did research in Guatemala. We have toured the psychiatric facilities in each country.
  • We fund scholarships for youth in El Salvador and support health research work by SUMMIT in Indonesia. These programs vary from year to year, although the scholarship fund in El Salvador has been stable at about $3000 per year. Money comes from donors, and 100% is used for the programs above.
    grants $3,000
  • Over recent years, CHHD has partnered with New Community Project and other agencies to increase affordable housing in Harrisonburg VA, especially for persons who have been homeless and for immigrants. We provide property management services, emotional support to residents, and monitor and supervise the finances for 4 homes serving about 20 persons. The idea is to house and keep housed persons with histories of chronic homelessness in long term affordable housing. Rents run from $200 to $940/person and include utilities. Volunteers provide some services, including CHHD board members. We entered into discussions at the end of 2024 to take on managing a 5th house, planned for mid-2025. We also sold one house to a low income single mother and continue to support and train her as a new home owner.
