Program accomplishments

  • PADDLING PROGRAM - OUR PADDLING PROGRAM IS AT THE HEART OF OUR MISSION BY SUPPORTING CANCER PATIENTS AND SURVIVORS IN INTEGRAL WAYS. TWO TO THREE COMMUNITY PADDLES TAKE PLACE EACH WEEK, AVERAGING 36 PADDLERS A DAY. PADDLING ON OUR MAUI OCEAN WATERS PROVIDES A DEEPLY HEALING EXPERIENCE. WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY BUILT A FLEET OF SEVEN PINK CANOES INCLUDING THREE DOUBLE-HULL CANOES. CHEMOTHERAPY REDUCES MUSCLE STRENGTH AND FREQUENTLY CAUSES FATIGUE. IN STABLE DOUBLE HULLS WITH A CADRE OF PADDLING SUPPORTERS, OUR MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS CAN RIDE WITHOUT EXERTING ENERGY AND STILL BENEFIT FROM BEING ON THE HEALING MAUI OCEAN. HUNDREDS OF MAUI RESIDENTS AND VISITORS PADDLED WITH US IN 2024. PEOPLE HEAL WITH US PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND SPIRITUALLY, AND THE EFFECTS ARE PROFOUND. WE OFFER A UNIQUE SERVICE THAT DEEPLY TOUCHES THE LIVES OF EVERYONE WHO PADDLES WITH US.

  • WAVES OF HOPE CANCER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - CANCER PATIENTS OFTEN REPORT DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND FATIGUE. THEY FEAR RECURRENCE OR EVEN DEATH. THEY WORRY ABOUT PROHIBITIVE MEDICAL EXPENSES. MANA'OLANA ESTABLISHED THE WAVES OF HOPE CANCER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM IN DECEMBER 2019 TO HELP REDUCE FINANCIAL STRESS FOR MAUI'S CANCER PATIENTS. THE PROGRAM IS ADMINISTERED BY A FIVE-MEMBER VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT, BUSINESS, NONPROFITS, AND HEALTH SERVICES. WE OFFER ASSISTANCE OF UP TO $500 TO CANCER PATIENTS FOR COMPLIMENTARY CARE AND NATUROPATHIC AND HOLISTIC MEDICINE. WE ALSO OFFER SECOND-ROUND ASSISTANCE TO THOSE IN GREATEST NEED. TO QUALIFY, APPLICANTS MUST BE MAUI COUNTY RESIDENTS, 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, AND DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. APPLICATIONS ARE SUBMITTED ONLINE VIA A SIMPLE FORM. THE COMMITTEE REVIEWS AND MAKES DECISIONS, AND THE COMMITTEE CHAIR, A RETIRED CPA, INFORMS APPLICANTS OF AWARDS. CHECKS ARE CUT AND MAILED TO PRACTITIONERS, WITH INFORMATION TRACKED AND REPORTED.ACUPUNCTURE, MASSAGE, AND VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS HAVE A PROFOUND EFFECT ON HEALING AND RECOVERY YET OFTEN ARE NOT COVERED BY HEALTH INSURANCE. IN 2024, $5,440 IN SCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED TO 12 CANCER PATIENTS WHO OBTAINED COMPLIMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE CANCER TREATMENTS AND ASSISTANCE WITH MEDICAL BILLS. AGES RANGED FROM 50-67. HALF WERE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER, WHILE OTHERS INCLUDED COLON, OVARIAN, LUNG, AND PANCREATIC CANCER. ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF OUR AWARDEES HAD ADVANCED STAGES OF CANCER (STAGES 3 AND 4). SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENTS WENT DIRECTLY TO HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS FOR MASSAGE THERAPY, ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS, IV THERAPY TREATMENTS, AND CO-PAYS FOR MEDICAL DOCTORS, CHEMOTHERAPY, AND RADIATION TREATMENTS. FOLLOW-UP CALLS WERE MADE TO AWARDEES BY OUR COMMITTEE CHAIR TO ENSURE TREATMENTS WERE MOVING FORWARD. WE ALSO PROVIDED ONE INDIVIDUAL WITH FREE MEMBERSHIP AND ONE CONTRIBUTIONS TO A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION.ALL AWARDEES ARE LOW-INCOME PEOPLE IN GREAT NEED OF SUPPORT PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND FINANCIALLY. WE HAVE RECEIVED OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM OUR RECIPIENTS WHO REPORT FEELING LESS STRESSED AND UPLIFTED DURING DIFFICULT TIMES. WE'VE ALSO HEARD FROM HEALTH CLINICS ABOUT THE QUALITATIVE BENEFITS OF THESE SERVICES TO THEIR LOW-INCOME PATIENTS. WE ARE MAKING A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN CANCER PATIENTS' LIVES. ABOUT TWO TO THREE VOLUNTEER HOURS EACH WEEK ARE DEDICATED TO THIS PROGRAM.
