Mission
The mission of Free Ride Bicycle Project is to enable people of all ages in the Pittsburgh region to obtain recycle and maintain bicycles for free or low cost. Free Ride aims to enhance the health of our community and environment by promoting bicycle transportation. We carry out this mission through earn-a-bike programs open shops free bicycles for kids and conducting outreach in the community.
Program accomplishments
- Volunteer Night: During volunteer nights community members and volunteer staff work together to refurbish donated bicycles for sale and donation and maintain the shop space to keep things clean and organized. In addition Volunteer Night serves as an education program where volunteer staff and council members educate community members about how to repair bikes and volunteers learn repair skills through doing. Our activities during this program are deliberately designed to educate our volunteers about bicycles and bicycle maintenance. We welcome people of all experience levels to attempt mechanical repairs in a supportive environment while contributing to the mission of the organization. In 2025 we repaired ~680 bikes received ~2,550 hours of volunteer support where volunteers fix bikes learn from staff members how to repair bikes and help maintain the shop and donated over ~800 bicycles to partner organizations that also repair and refurbish bikes.Expenses $8,177
- Open Shop: We open the shop for community members to bring in their own bicycles for repair or for the general public to purchase bikes and parts. Community members may fix a bike using the bicycle tools and parts available or buy used bicycles and parts. Designated Volunteer Staffers are on-hand to answer questions about how to do a repair and demonstrate bike maintenance skills. Also during Open Shop patrons purchase low-cost bicycles or request free bicycles through our free bike program. Open Shop is a community resource which is by its name open to everyone. Some of the vulnerable populations served include students unhoused individuals low income families and children. In 2025 Open Shop patrons purchased 626 free and low-cost bicycles. We served ~8,000 patrons who worked on their own bikes and purchased used parts and bicycles with about ~960 hours of volunteer staff time spent helping patrons learn how to repair their own bicycles.Expenses $8,177
- Free Bikes for Kids: Free Ride refurbishes and repairs kids bikes then gives them away to the public for free. In 2025 we repaired and gave away over 100 kids bikes.
