Mission

Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue of Arizona (DHDR) is Arizonas oldest 501(c)(3) nonprofit Doberman rescue organization. Founded on January 6, 2009, our mission is (1) to rescue placeable purebred Dobermans in Arizona, evaluate and treat them, and place them in loving forever homes, (2) to act as an educational resource to the community regarding Dobermans, Doberman health, and raising Dobermans, and (3) network Dobermans in need, supporting other organizations that are looking to also find homes for Dobermans.

Program accomplishments

  • In 2025 we took in 81 Dobermans and had 64 adoptions. Year over year, we took in 10 fewer puppies, and in 2025 transferred 10 puppies out (variance of 20), which is one of the main reasons for the lower intake and adoption volume. We predicted this possibility in 2024. Our limited number of fosters also impacted our ability to keep up with previous year intake numbers. We continue to see more behavior case requests than ever before; it is a known widespread issue across rescues and behavior professionals. We continue to focus on cross-posting and emphasizing our shift to be a networker and connector. We cross post at least 500 Dobermans each year. We have sent 24 bags of food. We have done 17 spay/neuter or vet visits ($4725.92) for community Dobermans in 2025, and are already off to a strong start in 2026 as well. With a ton of work last year, we re-launched our email marketing/education program and continued it into 2025.We continue to expand our trainer referral list in alignment with our Humane Hierarchy philosophy; it is great to have so many aligned partners to refer people to. We also attended the Aggression in Dogs conference to gain the latest learnings. We launched a partnership with Pet Academy to provide all our adopters with 30 days of free live-trainer text message support. 100% of our adopters are opting-in, and 80% are engaging with the text support. We took all year to revamp our apparel and goods, re-launching with Printful. This allows us more transparency into the products, and higher quality. We have set our profit at 0, with the intention for this to be a brand awareness play, not a revenue stream. Over the summer DHDR was contacted by an overwhelmed owner who had taken on and bred more Dobermans than he could handle, then lost his job. He had 31 Dobermans in his home. The owner loved his dogs dearly, but was overextended. Unlike other headline-catching cases, this owner was highly collaborative with DHDR. Our team conducted behavior and wellness evaluations on all of the Dobermans, documenting photos and each pup's needs in a playbook. With this volume of Dobermans all at once, some with, we had to get creative. DHDR partnered with Arizona Humane Society and Almost There. Between our organizations, over the course of two months, we were able to coordinate solutions that got 28 dogs into rescue.
