Mission

The Calapooia Watershed Council shall promote and sustain the health of the Calapooia Watershed. Stewardship, restoration, education, community involvement, and strategic partnerships are the tools we use in pursuit of this purpose.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2026

Program accomplishments

  • Habitat Restoration - The Council restores the Calapooia River watershed to improve habitat for ESA-listed salmonids and other native species. At the 300-acre Albany Oxbows and Truax Island Greenway, it replaces failed culverts and breaches berms to reconnect floodplains and eliminate fish traps. The Council stabilizes streambanks, removes invasive weeds, and plants thousands of native trees and shrubs along Periwinkle Creek and East Thornton Lake. It has restored the Calapooia River, Brush Creek, Oak Creek, and Courtney Creek and conducts long-term water monitoring. At Tub Run, it restored over 140 acres of rare wetland prairie, supporting the threatened Streaked Horned Lark while filtering pollutants and recharging groundwater. The Council also educates landowners and stakeholders through the Mid-Willamette Beaver Partnership and Mid-Valley River Connections Plan for Your Land workshops.
    Expenses $401,125 · revenue $433,053
  • Education and outreach The Council engages nearly 1,900 local youth annually in no-cost, hands-on outdoor science programs, transforming local habitats into living classrooms. Programs include Salmon Watch, where 685 fifth and sixth-graders study macroinvertebrates and salmon biology; Urban Ecology, which teaches fifth-graders the importance of healthy rivers and ecosystems; and the award-winning Roaming Rivers freshwater snorkeling program for high school youth, including those served by Jackson Street Youth Services and the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center. The Council also connects with families through Splashy Science days with the Albany Public Library and community events such as Festival Latino. These programs serve several Title I schools and many at-risk students.
    Expenses $96,506 · revenue $84,440
