Program accomplishments

  • Director Steve Langdon presented our peatland microclimate monitoring methods and data to the EPA Region 2 and 3 Resource Monitoring Network program. Shingle Shanty is now a pilot wetland monitoring site for this program thanks to EPA Region 3 who donated more data loggers to our ongoing monitoring efforts. SUNY Plattsburgh graduate student Shannon Cooper presented Shingle Shanty peatland groundwater monitoring data at the Northeast Naturalist Conference in Burlington, VT in April. We presented the first Shingle Shanty Graduate Research Award in memory of Muff Potter, to SUNY Plattsburgh Graduate Student Annie Arnold whose project is titled, "Insect Communities within a Large Boreal Peatland Complex at the Southern Range Limits of the North American Boreal-Temperate Ecotone." Annie deployed insect traps and collected data through October. In June, we completed our 13th year of monitoring boreal bird species at 38 points across the Shingle Shanty Peatland Complex. We were joined by NYSDEC Central Office wildlife staff as well as two NY Natural Heritage Program Field Technicians who are working on the current Breeding Bird Atlas. In September, SSPRS hosted a SUNY Plattsburgh and Clarkson University weekend field trip and collected vegetation data to support Annie Arnold's research. In October, we worked with Bill Church at CRCS and received a small grant to pilot a program to engage high school science students at the Profile School in Littleton, NH. In early December, Steve Langdon, and co-authors submitted a manuscript titled, "Effects on radial growth of boreal tree species in a North American Boreal-Temperate Ecotone peatland" to the international peer-reviewed journal Ecological Applications.
