Mission

The Theater of the Emerging American Moment, Inc. (The TEAM), is a Brooklyn-based theatre ensemble whose mission is to collaboratively create new works about the experience of living in America today, and to generate dialogue about our nation's past, present, and future through national and international touring.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • In FY25, the TEAM proudly sustained all of our major programs, including showcasing our major new work, RECONSTRUCTING, for the first time. We employed over 90 artists, maintained a lean staff of two full-time employees and three part-time employees, and expanded our operational capacity by joining ArtsPool, a cooperative that provides robust financial and workforce services to small organizations like ours. In October 2024, RECONSTRUCTING, our collectives major new work of theater about race and intimacy, had its first public showings at BAM as a part of Emerging Visions, a pilot initiative of the Next Wave festival. These public performances were the culmination of a 7-week intensive, during which we finished, staged, and teched the show through residencies at Mercury Store, Target Margin, and BAM. Our run at BAM sold out within weeks of going on sale, attracted great press attendance, and was named one of Vultures Shows We Cant Wait to See This Fall. Through these public showings, RECONSTRUCTING reached 1,000+ audience members, including longtime TEAM fans, BAMs audiences, and educational groups (from a high school theater ensemble to CUNY science majors). Dozens of national presenters and NYC producing institutions attended and followed up afterwards to discuss opportunities to support or program the piece in future seasons. Petri Projects, the TEAMs development lab, provides financial and producorial support to new theatrical works by artists in our community, where there is a field-wide lackfor early-stage projects and experimental and marginalized voices. Petri has proven itself to be a crucial offering in the New York City new work development pipeline. Several works that started with Petri have gone on to full productions at leading Off-Broadway institutions. This year, James Harrison Monacos TRAVELS, which received its first funding from Petri, made its world premiere at Ars Nova, and Flako Jimenezs MERCEDES premiered at BAM. In the 24-25 season we devoted an additional $20K to build out the to include our rigorous panel process, a community-centric cohort experience, and a celebratory culminating eventall to keep pace with the growing application pool and value of the program to our artists and audiences. Since 2017, Petri has funded 40+ projects, with66% le.The 24-25 cohort includes: Ato Blankson-Wood, Eric Emauni, Amyra Len, Curtis Holland, Leo Lion, and newly instated Petri Process Director Libby King.Projects ranged from an opera tracing a Black womans experience of medical racism to a movement-based meditation on the art of being a mom. The year culminated with the Petri Potluck, where audiences witnessed excerpts from all 24-25 Petri artists, including an opera on endometriosis, a dance embodying the mundanities and miracles of motherhood, and a Dionysian monologue. The event was held at the Bushwick Starr and was completely sold out.LIVE FROM MOUNT OLYMPUS: Produced in partnership with the Onassis Foundation and written by Nathan Yungerberg, LFMO is a free theatrical podcast that offers contemporary retellings of Greek myths, made accessible by telling them through a diverse cast of voices and colloquial 21st century language. Named one of the Best Podcasts for Kids by the LA Times, LFMO has reached almost 2 million total downloads nationally. In 2024, the series was educationally licensed with inquirED, an organization introducing inquiry-based learning to classrooms, and is now accessible in 1,600 schools across the US.In 2024-25, we released LFMOs 6th seasons, which tells the story of Theseus and Ariadne. The cast of over 30 voice actors featured a mix of veteran TEAM artists, including the legendary Andr De Shields, and young performers from Epic Theater Ensemble, an org that offers theater training to high school and college-aged students from Harlem and the South Bronx. Through this relationship with Epic, LFMO strengthens the pipeline of young actors working to make a career in theater and voice acting, and fosters a much-needed opportunity for intergenerational exchange around the themes in Greek Mythology that still resonate today. LFMO is available on all major podcast platforms. WORKSHOPS: In late 2024, we offered a Self-Producing for Artists and Ensembles workshop at ART/NYs South Oxford Space in Brooklyn. This 3-hour session, led by TEAM Producing Director Emma Orme and industry guest John Del Gaudio, focused on demystifying the budgeting process and offered tools including budget templates and best practices. 15 artists participated, and tickets started at $10. We also partnered with Onassis and the Center for Fiction to offer 2 workshops for kids aged 7-12 as part of their NEA Big Reads weekend. The first-ever live events based on our podcast, Become a Monster, a God and a Hero with Live from Mount Olympus included an Acting and a Writing workshop led by Julie Burstein (Creator & Showrunner), Nathan Yungerberg, Emma Orme, and actors Libby King, Sean Carvajal, and Nedra Marie Taylor. These workshops, which took place at the Center for Fiction in Brooklyn, taught 30 kids (and 50+ parents that attended with them) how to become characters from the podcast and build their own stories around them.
