Program accomplishments

  • Netflix Behind the Streams Project 2024. Phase 1: Games and Internships: The First Phase gave high school students the opportunity to participate in a workshop series focused on STEAM and gaming careers, educational pathways, and the resources to pursue them. Students learned about Netflix internships and games and heard STEAM stories during a Q&A panel with Netflix guest speakers and STGA's near-peer college interns. The workshops also included hands-on activities with exciting rewards, such as gift cards and tablets, for participants. Phase 2: The Second Phase offered a workshop series that introduced students to STEAM careers at Netflix. Participants explored topics such as careers in product management, UX design, and advertising strategies. The workshops featured STEAM-related stories, Q&A sessions with Netflix guest speakers, and insights from STGA's near-peer college interns. Students participated in engaging hands-on activities and received rewards, including gift cards and tablets, for their involvement. Conducted at Garfield Teen Life Center in Seattle's historically Black Central District, 97% of participants reported increased confidence in STEAM fields. 148 students requested notifications about future STGA workshop opportunities.

  • Star Tech Global Academy's Project Lift Off workshop series was successfully completed at Magnuson Community Center between November 2024 and May 2025. Ultimately this project served a diverse group of 18 participants, of whom 13 completed the full workshop series: 7 teens (ages 16-18) and 6 adults (ages 43-67), all 13 from low-income communities. The program offered free workshops that provided participants with devices, internet connectivity, digital literacy skills, job market readiness, and online certificates. Participants were guided through identifying and enrolling in relevant in-demand online certificate programs on Coursera as well as making progress toward completing their desired programs. The project included a 2-month Training Phase with workshops on digital literacy and job readiness as well as certificate progress. This was followed by a 4-month Practice Phase with bi-weekly check-ins and peer support to encourage certificate progress, as well as mentorship and support from diverse community members. By the project's end, 12 certificates were surprisingly actually completed within the time frame of the project, while additional certificates are still in progress. Exit surveys show 100% of participants reporting increases in STEAM interest, confidence, and belonging. Participant 1, age 16: "I liked how encouraging the workshop was for students and how flexible and the program is because it gives people time to efficiently finish their courses" Participant 2, age 44: "I came into this program wanting to find a job in IT, but I didn't know where to start. Through Project Lift Off, I was able to complete my Coursera certificate in Software development, and now I feel confident applying for tech jobs."
