Program accomplishments

  • Marquesas Project: AFAR President Barry Rolett and two students (one American, one British) spent 5 weeks (June 23 - July 27, 2025) on Tahuata (Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), with a two-night layover in Tahiti after meeting there on June 21. Our team worked with the local community to design and mount a new exhibit ("Marquesan Origins") for the Tahuata Museum, Te Ana Peua. We also surveyed a new site - a rock shelter near the Hanamiai dune. In Honolulu, Rolett and Univ. of Hawai'i students worked during the 2024/2025 academic year to organize and rebag archaeological collections from our excavations at the Hanamiai dune site. On June 21, the collections (45 bankers boxes weighing 300 kg) were shipped by air freight to the Tahiti Museum for repatriation. Rolett spent one week working at the Tahiti Museum (July 27 - August 2) to organize the collections for long-term storage
