Mission
Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO), founded in 2006, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving neighborhood livability, vitality, and sustainability by making Oakland a better place to walk and bike. We engage residents, workers, business owners, and commuters in education and advocacy for improving Oakland's pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure
Program accomplishments
- Walk Oakland Bike Oaklands (WOBO) furthered its neighborhood campaigns that enhance our communitys ability to win safety and quality of life infrastructure improvements. Its vision is to make Oakland the most accessible city in the world by providing world class, safe, and sustainable transportation options for everyone. In 2025,1. WOBO won an on-call contract with Oaklands Department of Transportation to support mobility-related programming for funding up to $250,000 through 2028. WOBO selected three groups in East Oakland to increase access to bicycles, bicycle maintenance capacities, and the establishment of a neighborhood action council on 90th Avenue in Deep East Oakland (also the site of the annual East Oakland Futures Fest). Programming will begin in 2026.2. Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) began implementing technical assistance to residents interested in installing traffic calming tools on city roads to prevent reckless and speeding driving behaviors. WOBOs integral role in helping residents serves to empower residents with a broader toolkit of tactical urbanism ideas and materials in order to quickly remediate unsafe driving behaviors in Oaklands most needed neighborhoods that often take years of study and expensive remedies. This pilot seeks to a) Broaden awareness and agency among neighbors in typically under-represented neighborhoods of Oakland to improve safety on their streets, and to b) Integrate lessons and tested pilot practices in forming a broader and more inclusive Community-led Traffic Calming Safety initiative at the City of Oakland. The project is funded for the period of 1/1/2025 through 12/31/2026.3. The 2025 East Oakland Futures Fest (EOFF), held on June 7, 2025. EOFF represents the fourth consecutive year in celebrating the Deep East Oakland community as it exists today and a community that envisions a thriving future for the black community. Approximately 2,000 people participated in the festival, including newly elected Mayor Barbara Lee, Councilmember Rowena Brown, and a team from Congresswoman Latifah Simon. This remarkable consistency in programming street festivals in Deep East Oakland demonstrates that neighborhoods upon which the popular media typically casts a negative light deserve the respect and joy that is enjoyed in more affluent and well-resourced neighborhoods.4. On May 15, 2025, Oaklands Bike To Wherever Day set a record for the number ofbicyclists pedaling in the morning with elected officials to city hall, and participation at an on-street afternoon happy hour. Five city council members, a Alameda County Board of Supervisor, and AC Transit Board Director pedaled together with residents and reaffirmed the role of traffic safety as public safety. Advocates and elected officials alike urged the City administration to activate the sale of voter-approved Measure U bonds in order to fund safety improvements on roadways despite Oaklands tenuous fiscal outlook.5. In the summer of 2025, the WOBO Board and past participants of the hibernating Ride Like A Girl bicycling series resumed planning for a 2026 year to help build bike skills and confidence for women, trans, femme and non-binary folks who want to go Bike Camping!Expenses $80,302
