Program accomplishments

  • NEW HOPE OKLAHOMA IS A TULSA-BASED, STATE-SERVING 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROVIDING SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND THEIR CARE-GIVING FAMILIES ENDURING THE EMOTIONAL, ECONOMIC AND DEVELOPMENTAL HARDSHIP OF HAVING A PARENT (OR PARENTS) IN PRISON, JAIL, OR OTHERWISE JUSTICE-INVOLVED IN OKLAHOMA. OUR PROGRAMS CONSIST OF SUMMER CAMPS, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, FAMILY GATHERINGS, HOLIDAY SUPPORT AND CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES. ALL PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED AT NO COST TO QUALIFYING FAMILIIES. FROM 2020-2025, NEW HOPE AVERAGED AN ACTIVE YOUTH AND ADULT CAREGIVER CLIENT POPULATION OF NEARLY 1,300 ANNUALLY SERVED ACROSS ALL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. NEW HOPES AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS INCLUDE BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT, ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES, AND CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES. NEW HOPE WORKS WITH CHILDREN THROUGH SUPPORT GROUPS TO ENHANCE OVERALL WELL BEING AND OVERCOME TRAUMA. OUR APPROACH INCLUDES FACILITATING A UNIQUE CURRICULUM CALLED HERO, DEVELOPED BY OKLAHOMA BEHAVIORAL HEALTH LEADER AND CURRENT DIRECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA'S SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK, DR. DAVID MCLEOD, AND FACILITATED BY POSITIVE AND HIGHLY TRAINED ADULTS TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE HEAL AND COPE. OUR EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULA ADDRESS THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF OUR UNIQUE POPULATION, WHILE OUR STAFF TRAINING COMBINES BEST PRACTICES IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT WITH MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGIES TARGETING CHILDREN OF PRISONERS, SUCH AS TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE AND BENEVOLENT CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, NEW HOPE ALSO OFFERS PARTICIPANTS EXTENDED OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH OUTSIDE PARTNERS AND FIELD TRIPS. SCHOOL DISTRICTS SERVED INCLUDE TULSA PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND OKLAHOMA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WITH CURRENT MEMORANDA OF UNDERSTANDING APPROVED BY THE RESPECTIVE SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS. COMMUNITY- BASED SERVICES EXTEND TO CHURCHES AND NON-PROFIT PARTNERS, SUCH AS THE SALVATION ARMY'S AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS. NEW HOPE'S SUMMER CAMPS OFFER YOUNG PEOPLE A RANGE OF MEANINGFUL SERVICES AND CONNECTION POINTS IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. NEW HOPE CAMPS PROVIDE A SAFE, HEALTHY, AND FUN LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO INCREASE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCIES. THEY ALSO AIM TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES NOT TYPICALLY OFFERED DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, SUCH AS EXCITING RECREATIONAL AND STEAM ENRICHMENTS (I.E., FISHING, SWIMMING, CAMPING, SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS, FIELD TRIPS, ETC.). RECOGNIZING THE POWER OF COMMUNITY FOR YOUTH AND THEIR CAREGIVERS, NEW HOPE PROVIDES YEAR-ROUND CLIENT ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING: BACK TO SCHOOL BASH, TRUNK-OR-TREATING, THANKSGIVING MEALS, GAME NIGHT, WINTER HOLIDAY GIFTS, SKATE NIGHT, MOVIE NIGHT AND PARTNER RESOURCE FAIRS. NEW HOPE SENDS PERSONALIZED BIRTHDAY CARDS ANNUALLY TO EVERY CHILD IN ACTIVE ENROLLMENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE MILESTONES THAT MAY BRING THE LOSS OF A PARENT IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM TO THE FOREFRONT, AND OFFERS YOUTH A BIT OF JOY AND COMFORT FROM A BROADER COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT.
