Mission
SOUTH MIAMI CHILDREN'S CLINIC PROVIDES HIGH-QUALITY, ACCESSIBLE PEDIATRIC HEALTH CARE TO UNINSURED, UNDERINSURED, MEDICAID, AND OTHER UNDERSERVED CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH AGE 18, REGARDLESS OF A FAMILY'S ABILITY TO PAY. THE CLINIC SERVES AS A MEDICAL HOME FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHILE IMPROVING ACCESS TO PREVENTIVE, PRIMARY, SPECIALTY, AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES AND ADDRESSING SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH THAT AFFECT CHILDREN'S OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
Program accomplishments
- SOUTH MIAMI CHILDREN'S CLINIC WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2007 TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY PEDIATRIC HEALTH CARE FOR CHILDREN IN THE SOUTH MIAMI COMMUNITY WHO FACED FINANCIAL AND OTHER BARRIERS TO CARE. WITH THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL PHILANTHROPISTS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL, AND BAPTIST HEALTH, THE CLINIC DEVELOPED A SUSTAINABLE SAFETY-NET MODEL DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT CHILDREN CAN RECEIVE CONSISTENT MEDICAL CARE REGARDLESS OF FAMILY INCOME OR INSURANCE STATUS. THE CLINIC INITIALLY FOCUSED ON UNINSURED CHILDREN. AFTER RECOGNIZING THAT OBTAINING MEDICAID COVERAGE COULD INADVERTENTLY DISRUPT CONTINUITY OF CARE BY REQUIRING ESTABLISHED PATIENTS TO SEEK CARE ELSEWHERE, THE CLINIC EXPANDED ITS ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA IN 2010 TO INCLUDE MEDICAID PATIENTS. THIS CHANGE ALLOWED CHILDREN TO MAINTAIN AN ONGOING RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR PEDIATRIC PROVIDERS AND STRENGTHENED THE CLINIC'S ABILITY TO FUNCTION AS A TRUE PEDIATRIC MEDICAL HOME. TODAY, THE CLINIC PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE PEDIATRIC SERVICES TO CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH AGE 18, INCLUDING WELL-CHILD EXAMINATIONS, SICK VISITS, SCHOOL AND SPORTS PHYSICALS, IMMUNIZATIONS, PREVENTIVE HEALTH SERVICES, DEVELOPMENTAL SURVEILLANCE, AND COORDINATION OF SPECIALTY CARE. THROUGH CHARITABLE SUPPORT FROM SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL AND BAPTIST HEALTH, ELIGIBLE UNINSURED PATIENTS HAVE ACCESS TO MEDICALLY NECESSARY SERVICES THAT EXTEND BEYOND THE CLINIC, INCLUDING LABORATORY TESTING, RADIOLOGY, OUTPATIENT SERVICES, PHARMACEUTICALS, AND EMERGENCY AND INPATIENT HOSPITAL CARE. THE CLINIC COORDINATES ACCESS TO SPECIALTY CARE FOR CHILDREN WHO REQUIRE SERVICES BEYOND PRIMARY PEDIATRIC CARE BY REFERRING PATIENTS TO OUTSIDE SPECIALTY PHYSICIANS AND APPROPRIATE COMMUNITY HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS FOR EVALUATION AND TREATMENT. THE CLINIC'S MISSION HAS EVOLVED BEYOND ADDRESSING CHILDREN'S IMMEDIATE MEDICAL NEEDS TO RECOGNIZING AND ADDRESSING THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES THAT INFLUENCE THEIR HEALTH. THROUGH ITS LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY AND THE NEIGHBORHOODHELP PROGRAM, THE CLINIC HELPS CONNECT FAMILIES WITH RESOURCES ADDRESSING SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, INCLUDING FOOD INSECURITY, HOUSING NEEDS, AND BARRIERS TO HEALTH CARE. THE CLINIC ALSO WORKS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS FOOD INSECURITY AND OTHER UNMET FAMILY NEEDS. THESE EFFORTS COMPLEMENT TRADITIONAL PEDIATRIC CARE AND REFLECT THE CLINIC'S COMMITMENT TO TREATING THE WHOLE CHILD WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE FAMILY AND COMMUNITY. SOUTH MIAMI CHILDREN'S CLINIC REMAINS COMMITTED TO STRENGTHENING ITS ROLE AS A TRUSTED PEDIATRIC MEDICAL HOME IN SOUTH MIAMI AND TO ENSURING THAT CHILDREN HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY HEALTH CARE REGARDLESS OF INCOME OR INSURANCE STATUS. SUPPORT FROM BAPTIST HEALTH, SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL, ACADEMIC PARTNERS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND PRIVATE PHILANTHROPY ALLOWS THE CLINIC TO EXTEND ITS IMPACT BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE MEDICAL OFFICE.Expenses $277,542 · revenue $72,751
- DURING THE YEAR, SOUTH MIAMI CHILDREN'S CLINIC RECEIVED A 100,000 DONATION FROM A PRIVATE DONOR TO SUPPORT CLINIC OPERATIONS AND PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY. A PORTION OF THESE FUNDS SUPPORTED SWIMMING LESSONS FOR MORE THAN 60 CHILDREN THROUGH A COLLABORATION WITH A COMMUNITY CENTER LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE CLINIC. THIS INITIATIVE PROVIDED CHILDREN WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP IMPORTANT WATER-SAFETY AND SWIMMING SKILLS.ALSO SUPPORTED A ONE- WEEK CHILDREN'S COOKING CAMP IN COLLABORATION WITH 305MINICHEFS AND ATHENA ATKINSON. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED PARTICIPATING CHILDREN WITH HANDS-ON EXPOSURE TO COOKING AND FOOD PREPARATION WHILE ENCOURAGING HEALTHY EATING AND NUTRITION. THESE PROGRAMS COMPLEMENT THE CLINIC'S PEDIATRIC MEDICAL SERVICES BY PROVIDING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WITH OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES THAT PROMOTE HEALTH, SAFETY, NUTRITION, AND OVERALL WELL-BEING.Expenses $13,450
