LOS PADRES FORESTWATCH PROTECTS THE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST AND THE CARRIZO PLAIN NATIONAL MONUMENT THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, AND WHEN NECESSARY, LEGAL ACTION FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR COMMUNITIES, CLIMATE AND FUTURE GENERATIONS.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2024

Program accomplishments

  • Advocacy & Monitoring Monitored development and resource extraction proposals throughout Los Padres National Forest, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and other public lands along Californias central coast, advocating for maximum environmental protection. Submitted comment letters, filed appeals, met with land management agencies, collaborated with scientists, and conducted on-the-ground monitoring and surveys to protect land, rivers, plants, and wildlife. Ensured cancellation of a plan to drill 8 new oil wells in the forest. Monitored forest thinning operation on Tecuya Ridge. Spearheaded legal challenge to protect endangered steelhead trout. Secured passage of Room to Roam Act to protect our regions wildlife.
    Expenses $467,342
  • Public Education & Outreach Informed local communities about the value of our regions public lands, the threats and challenges facing these wild places, and opportunities to better protect these areas. Distributed information via our website, monthly e-news, news releases, webinars, and public events. Organized several outings with youth and families from underserved communities to introduce them to the outdoors and foster the next generation of public lands advocates. Orchestrated events in conjunction with Latino Conservation Week and undertook other initiatives to increase underrepresented voices in the outdoors.
    Expenses $357,730
  • Land Stewardship & Volunteer Programs: Managed 68 acres of private forestland in the San Emigdio Mountains that we acquired for conservation purposes. Organized crews to remove hundreds of pounds of toxic lead and trash throughout the forest, reducing pollution to soils and waterways. Cleaned up more than 900 lbs. of lead ammunition and over 500 lbs. of plastic across seven different derelict target shooting sites in Ventura County. Engaged volunteers, and provided educational and career growth to 7 interns and fellows, providing training and inspiration for tomorrows conservation leaders.
    Expenses $32,999
