Mission
Bushwick Housing Independence Project (BHIP) builds the collective strength, stability, visibility and self-determination of Bushwicks working class and immigrant renters. BHIPs anti- displacement work is grounded in a commitment to maintaining the social and cultural fabric of Bushwick, not just preserving individual homes but also history, culture and community networks- the fabric of the neighborhood.
Program accomplishments
- Tenant Education and Empowerment - BHIP hosts monthly tenant rights workshops for renters in Bushwick and greater Brooklyn. These sessions cover key topics such as requesting and enforcing repairs, filing complaints through DHCR administrative proceedings, and navigating housing court. BHIP also collaborates with JustFix, a housing data nonprofit, to support the development of digital tools through user testing, community feedback sessions, and training with BHIP members.Expenses $32,831
- Outreach, Counseling, Organizing and Advocacy Services: BHIP provides direct outreach, housing rights information, referrals, and support to tenants experiencing housing-related issues. This includes accompaniment and assistance for tenants during housing court proceedings, as well as help understanding lease agreements and responding to notices.Expenses $43,776
- Leadership Development: BHIP offers leadership development programs for tenants organizing around housing justice. In 2025, BHIP launched a leadership cohort for four tenants seeking to deepen their knowledge and skills in tenant organizing, of which two tenants will move into BHIP's upcoming Senior Leadership team. Cohort members participate in monthly training sessions, peer learning circles, and one-on-one coaching. The program emphasizes education in housing rights, community engagement strategies, and collaborative problem-solving.Expenses $32,831
