Mission
The Quintet's mission is to broaden the knowledge and appreciation of music from the Western Hemisphere, and particularly new music, through the performance, commissioning, and recording of woodwind quintets and related chamber music. We encourage inter-cultural appreciation and understanding by performing contemporary, classical, and folk-derived music from the diverse cultural traditions of the Americas. We search out collaborations with composers, guest artists, other ensembles, and other organizations to enrich our own growth and to enrich the musical products we bring to the community.
Program accomplishments
- From October 2024 to June 2025, Quintet of the Americas (QOA) served over 1,100 people with 22 free live concerts featuring new music in Queens and 1 in Manhattan. These concerts were performed for audiences that included seniors, the disabled, and families. In November 2024 QOA participated in the Latin American Culture Week Festival in NYC by performing seven concerts in Queens and Manhattan including for seniors in Sunnyside and Bayside and at Langston Hughes Library, and at the Alzheimer's Day Care program in St. Albans, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Queens, at Queens Botanical Garden and at the National Opera Center in Manhattan. This Manhattan concert was recorded and live-streamed. Repertoire included the premiere of the 2025 Memory Project piece written by Fernando Otero for the seniors at Sunnyside Community Services, the premieres of works by Jorge Amado, Sergio Delgado, and a commission by Ernesto Oliva also performing on piano, and works by Gabriela Ortiz, Maria Grever, and Jorge Olaya Muñoz. QOA established a new residency at the Queens Botanical Garden and performed there five times during the season. In the spring QOA performed at Loisaida Center in Lower Manhattan, at 8 senior centers, 2 libraries, a church, and a rehabilitation center as well as the concerts at Queens Botanical Garden. The program "Living American Composers" included new QOA commission "Satchmo in New Orleans" by Sunny Knable, and the premiere of "Three American Folk Tunes" by Allen Shultz, plus works by Joseph Jones and Valerie Coleman. Composers Jones, Knable and Shultz were present at many of the concerts and introduced their pieces. Quintet of the Americas reached over 1,600 students in school demonstration concerts at 4 public schools. At PS199Q, PS85Q and PS127Q in Queens, QOA used music from Latin America in interactive concerts that demonstrated the instruments of the woodwind quintet and concepts of melody, harmony and rhythm. Students at each school performed with us on several pieces at the end of the programs using percussion instruments from our collection. At middle school MS75 75 Morton School in Manhattan, QOA demonstrated rehearsal techniques in a bilingual Spanish English presentation. Music featured works from Latin America and our Living American Composers program.
