Mission
To promote and maintain public open spaces in the areas in proximity to the seeking river, specifically including Blackstone Park and the open space which divides Blackstone Boulevard; and to carry on any other activity that may be lawfully carried on by a corporation formed under the Rhode Island Nonprofit Corporation act as may be in effect from time to time.
Program accomplishments
- The popular Trolley Shelter summer concerts on the Boulevard returned with five shows by favorite artists. The music was enjoyed by hundreds of people. Some added a picnic dinner or danced in the closed street. A $2,000 Legislative Grant towards partial offset of this series' expenses was received in May, though it was technically for the events that took place within the 2024-25 fiscal year, i.e. concerts from July and August 2024, as well as June 2025.Expenses $8,985 · grants $2,000
- Blackstone Boulevard. A tree monitor was contracted to assess watering and care issues: they flagged trees for special attention, including re-establishing tree pits with high-quality mulch that suppresses weeds and holds moisture. Contractors watered young trees throughout the summer and fall. In a remediation effort near the Butler campus, work included aeration by a contractor, building protective mulch rings around trees, spreading loam for new grass seed, and raking the walking path back into shape.Expenses $25,090 · grants $500
- Blackstone Park. About 50 new trees and shrubs were planted in the ravine, with temporary protective fencing. Areas with erosion-prone soil were seeded for stabilization and protection from invasive plants. Trails were stabilized with logs and wood chips, and invasive plants were removed throughout the park. Fencing around the children's circle was improved. Park maps and entrance signs were updated.Expenses $2,718 · grants $2,207
- At Blackstone Park the Education Committee organized year-round events including a moonrise celebration, guided short cruises on the Seekonk River, guided nature walks, and birding. With 15 Minute Field trips, families explored educational activities and crafts in the long-running monthly series "Art and Science in the Park. Concerts also took place at the Blackstone Field, with music of various styles, including Classical Indian and jazz.Expenses $6,301
