TO PROVIDE EDUCATION, PEER SUPPORT, CONSULTING, AND PROGRAMS/SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY ANIRIDIA SYNDROME, A RARE GENETIC DISORDER CAUSED BY A MUTATION IN THE PAX6 GENE. THIS CONDITION RESULTS IN LOW VISION OR BLINDNESS AND IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH COMPLEX, LIFELONG MEDICAL CHALLENGES, INCLUDING CHILDHOOD GLAUCOMA, CATARACTS, RETINAL DISEASE, CORNEAL COMPLICATIONS DUE TO LIMBAL STEM CELL DEFICIENCY (LSCD), METABOLIC DISORDERS, A RARE FORM OF MONOGENIC DIABETES AND NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. BECAUSE ANIRIDIA SYNDROME IS DEGENERATIVE AND HAS NO KNOWN CURE, THE ORGANIZATION IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE BY ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE, SUPPORTING AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES, AND CONTRIBUTING TO RESEARCH EFFORTS AIMED AT DEVELOPING TREATMENTS AND, ULTIMATELY, A CURE.

SERVICES INCLUDE MENTORSHIP AND GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS OF NEWLY DIAGNOSED CHILDREN, AS WELL AS SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS NAVIGATING EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND INDEPENDENT LIVING WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENT. VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE CAREER- RELATED MENTORING ACCORDING TO THEIR EXPERTISE IN THE AREA. - THE ORGANIZATION COLLABORATES WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND RESEARCHERS TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF ANIRIDIA SYNDROME. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH INITIATIVES, SHARING PATIENT-INFORMED DATA, AND TRANSLATING COMPLEX MEDICAL INFORMATION INTO ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES FOR AFFECTED FAMILIES. LEADERSHIP ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTES TO THE FIELD THROUGH SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS AT MEDICAL AND VISION-RELATED CONFERENCES, AUTHORSHIP, AND DIRECT CONSULTATION WITH FAMILIES AND PROFESSIONALS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROMOTES PUBLIC AWARENESS THROUGH OUTREACH EFFORTS THAT EDUCATE COMMUNITIES ABOUT ANIRIDIA SYNDROME, VISUAL IMPAIRMENT, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH. THESE EFFORTS AIM TO INCREASE PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT, IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOMES, AND ENCOURAGE BROADER SUPPORT FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED COMMUNITY.Expenses $4,996
- THE ORGANIZATION SUPPORTS AND ADVANCES RESEARCH ON ANIRIDIA SYNDROME THROUGH MULTIPLE INITIATIVES: 1.PROVIDING FUNDING FOR RESEARCH STUDIES, EITHER INDEPENDENTLY OR IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER VISION-FOCUSED ORGANIZATIONS. 2.PARTNERING WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND RESEARCHERS TO FACILITATE CLINICAL TRIALS AND ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION FROM AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS. 3.MAINTAINING A SECURE, DE-IDENTIFIED PATIENT REGISTRY TO SUPPORT RESEARCH EFFORTS. ACCESS TO REGISTRY DATA IS GRANTED TO QUALIFIED RESEARCHERS UPON REVIEW AND APPROVAL BY MEDICAL AND RESEARCH ADVISORS. RECENT RESEARCH INITIATIVES INCLUDE STUDIES ADDRESSING LIMBAL STEM CELL DEFICIENCY (LSCD), WITH POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH ANIRIDIA SYNDROME. HOWEVER, WE HAVE SEEN THAT IT COULD POTENTIALLY ALSO IN ADDITION HELP OTHERS WITH CORNEAL DAMAGE DUE TO LSCD FROM INJURY (CHEMICAL / THERMAL BURNS TO THE EYES) OR OTHER CORNEAL DISEASE.Expenses $25,133
