Mission

Putney Mountain Association believes there is a vital link between humans and the natural environment. Our primary objectives are to strengthen that link by preserving undeveloped land in southeastern Vermont for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations and to protect the natural habitat and wildlife corridor of the area.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Acquisition - In April 2025, PMA purchased a 159 acre parcel in Dummerson. Raised a total of 49,486 in private donations and grant awards of 476,465. A management plan was developed, the parcels boundaries were identified and marked, and it was enrolled in Vermonts UVA Program. The property is now permanently protected from development, wildlife and plant habitat is preserved and public access for outdoor recreation is guaranteed.
    Expenses $44,210
  • Stewardship - Stewardship of 1,085 acres of forestland and wetlands. Two mechanical treatments of an 8-acre barberry infestation were conducted on a Westminster parcel. An ecological assessment of 160 acres in Brookline was completed including natural community mapping, invasive plant inventory and an inspection of water-bars and old skid roads. Fourteen white ash trees including Vermonts largest white ash were inoculated against emerald ash borer. Stewardship includes payment of all related property taxes, insurance and land management program.
    Expenses $10,531
  • Trails - Purchased, assembled, and installed a new solar charger to power the surface well water pump that provides water for sheep that graze on the Putney Mountain summit. A trail reroute project on the main summit trail one of the busiest trails in SE VT was completed. Sixteen interpretive signs aluminum laminate with text, PMA logo and graphics were placed on the Summit Loop and West Cliff Trail and have been very well received by hikers. Finally, PMA has purchased decking for a boardwalk on the Libbys Way trail. The decking was purchased from a local sawmill and the wood is naturally resistant without chemical treatments. The new trail will bypass a severely eroded road which is muddy in the spring and after rain and is near a wetland.
    Expenses $11,966
