- Teaching (Medical and Interprofessional Education Program)Educating and training healthcare professionals is vital to MaineHealth's mission. This is a critical component to the delivery of quality health care and developing the health care workforce. To that end we have established a number of robust training and education programs. MaineHealth's flagship hospital, Maine Medical Center (MMC), has a long history of educating medical students, residents, interprofessional providers and faculty. (Continued on Schedule O)(Continued from page 2 of 990, Line 4b) The Department of Medical Education manages multiple educational programs and resources. Education programs span undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and interprofessional provider education. Education services include the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation, Library and Learning Commons, and the Journal of Maine Medical Center. In undergraduate medical education, the Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) - MaineHealth Maine Track Program, known as the "Maine Track", was established in 2008 and offers a unique and innovative curriculum, exposing students to rural practices and training in a major tertiary medical center. There are 40 matriculants in each TUSM class dedicated to the Maine Track. Much of the curriculum is based in Maine, particularly in the 2nd through 4th years of medical school. MHMMC developed a unique 9-month Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship offered at MHMMC and in 9 community hospital sites. 104 graduates of the Maine Track who have completed their residency programs are working in Maine as of 2025. Additionally, clerkship students from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine rotate through MHMMC and MaineHealth sites annually. MHMMC is the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Sponsoring Institution for 18 residency programs, 2 rural tracks, 1 rural concentration and 18 fellowship programs. Currently there are approximately 359 physician residents and fellows. Between 40-45% of MHMMC's graduating residents and fellows stay and practice medicine in Maine. Our graduates also go on to outstanding fellowship programs. In addition to physician postgraduate education, MHMMC sponsors an accredited critical care advanced practice provider fellowship program and, along with Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program. The Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation is a hub for interprofessional training at MaineHealth. Simulation advances patient safety by leveraging advanced technology as well as our simulated patient program to realistically recreate clinical scenarios to enable teams to practice and test and improve their clinical systems. Events occur both at our state-of-the-art 15,000 square-foot training center and "in situ" in clinical settings across Maine.Significant FY25 accomplishments include: Undergraduate Medical Education-Eleven of the 41 TUSM-MaineHealth Maine Track medical students who graduated in 2025 remained in Maine to complete their residency.-Successful continuation of an Art in Medicine elective class for medical students in partnership with Portland Museum of Art to emphasize practicing perspective, curiosity and stress tolerance that was highly successful and highlighted in the local newspaper.-Successful continuation of award-winning medical education pathway program, Inside Medicine, hosts up to 250 high school students interested in biology and medicine across Maine over the course of the school year through five monthly virtual sessions. This program was awarded the Association of American Medical College's Group on Regional Medical Campuses 2025 annual Community Star Award in recognition of the positive impact to the local community.-In collaboration with the Simulation Center, we hosted Doc4aDay, a community outreach program designed to spark interest in healthcare careers among high school students who show academic promise but may also experience barriers. Twenty-seven students participated, with support from staff, medical students, workforce development, and physicians. Graduate Medical Education (GME)-There are six academic tracks, Educator, Research, Healthcare Administration and Leadership, and Innovation, open to residents and fellows to acquire additional training.-MHMMC is a founding member of the state-wide "Maine Rural GME Education (MERGE) Collaborative", funded by the State of Maine, that has an infrastructure of rural GME electives across Maine. To date, twelve APP fellows have successfully completed the program. Nine of the twelve (75%) have been hired to Maine Medical Center ICU positions. -In FY25, the APP Education Office facilitated approximately 344 APP student placements within MaineHealth. Students from 39 institutions of higher education rotated through the MaineHealth system.Simulation-In collaboration with the HRSA-funded Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies (RMOMS) program, the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation (Sim Center) has enrolled seven hospitals in Maine Obstetric Medical Simulation (MOMSim 2.0), a telesim supported, locally driven, on-going obstetrical emergency simulation program at 12 hospitals across Maine. In addition, the team developed MOMSim ED, to support community emergency room teams to remain ready to safely deliver babies. The pilot site will launch in April 2026.-The Sim Center has partnered with nursing education to develop the first use cases of virtual and augmented reality simulation to more easily extend training across geographical areas. The Neonatal Simulation Team received a multimillion-dollar NIH grant to evaluate utilization of Holobaby, an augmented reality neonatal simulator, in the Maine Ongoing Outreach Simulation Program (MOOSE).-The Sim Center continues to expand train-the-trainer simulation faculty development via an annual Advanced Debriefing workshop, 3-day Simulation Instructor Course, Simulation Production Workshop and one day accelerated Simulation Instructor Course. We trained more than 70 interprofessional educators with these courses in 2025. -The Sim Center continues to work with Workforce Development to offer programs exposing Maine youth to healthcare careers through our Doc4aDay program (offered twice in 2025) and a monthly interactive simulation experience open to high school classes.-The simulation center conducted more than 564 events for more than 5875 participants in FY25.Journal of Maine Medical Center-The Journal of Maine Medical Center published two issues in 2025 containing 36 articles, with the Summer issue focused on tick-borne diseases. - ResearchResearch is a core component of the MaineHealth mission and essential to the delivery of quality health care in the future. MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) is the research arm of MaineHealth. MHIR supports and encourages a broad spectrum of research, ranging from basic laboratory-based research to translational and clinical research, to population and health services research. The institute has four scientific centers: the Center for Applied Science & Technology, the Center for Clinical & Translational Science, (Continued on Schedule O)(Continued from page 2 of 990, Line 4c) the Center for Interdisciplinary Population & Health Research, and the Center for Molecular Medicine. In 2025, MHIR had $23.1M in grant funding and received 22 new grants, allowing the institute's clinical and biomedical researchers to contribute to nationally and internationally-recognized scientific research.
