990.tax for AI assistants
Two Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers: look up any US nonprofit in IRS records for free, and prepare your organization's Form 990-N in the chat, then review, confirm and pay on 990.tax.
| Server | URL | Sign-in |
|---|---|---|
| Nonprofit lookup (free) | https://990.tax/mcp | None |
| Form 990-N filing | https://app.990.tax/mcp | Your 990.tax account |
File a Form 990-N from Claude or ChatGPT
- Add the connector once. In Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, URL
https://app.990.tax/mcp. In ChatGPT: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode → Create app with that URL. - Sign in and allow. 990.tax opens. Sign in (or create a free account) and allow the app to see your returns and start 990-N drafts. It can never file, pay, sign or delete. Your 990.tax password never goes to the AI app.
- Ask in plain words. “Start our 990-N for tax year 2024, EIN 12-3456789.” The assistant starts a draft with the legal name and tax year dates from IRS records and asks for what is missing: mailing address, principal officer, and whether gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less.
- Answer its questions. It saves your answers to the draft. It cannot change the EIN or the tax year.
- Check. “Check it for errors.” The draft is run through the IRS e-file rules and the IRS record: a ZIP code that does not match the state, a 990-N the IRS already has for that year, a revoked exemption. Nothing is sent to the IRS.
- Review and pay on 990.tax. The assistant gives you a link to your return on 990.tax. Every answer is shown with a Change link. Because the draft was started in an AI app, you tick that you reviewed every answer and confirm them; then you continue to payment at the usual 990.tax price. A 990-N needs no signature. 990.tax files it with the IRS after payment.
- Track it. “Did the IRS accept our 990-N?” You also get the usual email when the IRS accepts it.
Look up nonprofits (free, no sign-in)
Add https://990.tax/mcp the same way, with no authentication, and ask about any US tax-exempt organization. Every answer names its IRS source file and date and links the matching page on 990.tax.
- Is the Laramie Rotary Foundation in Wyoming still tax-exempt, and are any years missing from IRS records?
- Our PTO had about $30,000 in receipts with a June 30 year end. Which 990 do we file for tax year 2025 and when is it due?
- How many nonprofits in Texas file the 990-N, and which Texas nonprofits pay their top executive the most?
- Show five years of revenue and expenses for the American Red Cross.
- What does IRS reject code R0000-922-01 mean and how do we fix it?

Data
IRS public files, refreshed monthly: the Exempt Organizations Business Master File, the Form 990-N (e-Postcard) file, the automatic revocation list, Publication 78, and the e-filed Form 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF returns the IRS publishes. The IRS publishes returns months after they are filed, so recent filings can be missing. See nonprofit statistics for the data dates.
Privacy
Nonprofit lookup
- The server receives what your assistant sends to a tool: a name or EIN to look up, a state, a fiscal year end month, amounts for the form check. It needs nothing about you.
- We log the tool name, the type of AI client and the time, to measure use and keep the service up. We do not log what you asked or what was looked up. Your IP address is held in memory for one minute to limit request rates, and appears in our hosting provider's request logs, kept 30 days.
- No account, no cookies, no tracking across sites. Links in answers carry a UTM tag naming the AI client, so we can count visits from assistants.
- Answers go to your AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others) under that provider's terms. They contain only IRS public data.
- Someone named in IRS records can ask us to hide their name or address on 990.tax and in this server: email [email protected].
Form 990-N filing
- When you allow an AI app, 990.tax records your consent (the app's name, the date and the consent text). The app gets a token for your account, never your password.
- What you ask the app to read or change goes to it and to the company that runs it: your organization's name, EIN, address, officer, the 990-N answers and the filing status. Nothing else from your account.
- Drafts started in an AI app are marked as such. Your confirmation of the answers is recorded with the date and time before you can pay.
- End the connection at any time by removing the connector in the app, or by writing to [email protected]. We log the tool name and the type of AI client, not your answers.
