The Collection originated in the early 1970s, when Mesa College faculty member Dr. Barbara Winston Blackmun, who inaugurated the College's first transfer-level course in African art, began accepting donations of authentic objects created for ritual and everyday use so that students could study original works rather than reproductions. Private collectors donated museum-quality African art directly to the Foundation. The Collection has been curated since 2010 by art historian Dr. Denise Rogers. Substantially all holdings were acquired through charitable gift rather than purchase. The Foundation's exempt purpose is to advance the educational mission of San Diego Mesa College by securing and stewarding private resources for the benefit of its students and academic programs. The Collection furthers that purpose as an instructional and research asset embedded in the College's curriculum and made available to the public at no charge. Students enrolled in visual arts, art history, museum studies, anthropology, history, Black Studies, honors, and other humanities courses complete assignments grounded in objects from the Collection, examining each work's historical period, original function, and role in the cultural context that produced it. Each semester, students and volunteers work alongside the curator to research, select, interpret, and install exhibitions in the Glass Gallery of the campus Learning Resource Center, gaining applied experience in curatorial practice, object handling, and exhibition design that few community college students can access. Exhibitions are open without cost to the campus community and the general public; additional holdings are accessible through the Collection's online gallery, Glass Gallery, and World Art Gallery & Research Center in the Mesa College Learning Resource Center (LRC). The Collection has additionally supported outreach beyond the campus, including a partnerships with elementary schools, and an ongoing display at Kimbrough Elementary School. The Foundation maintains the Collection for public exhibition, scholarly research, and preservation for future generations, and not for financial gain. Proposed gifts of artwork are reviewed under the Foundation's gift acceptance procedures before accession. In the event of a deaccession, proceeds are restricted to the acquisition, care, preservation, and exhibition of other collection items. Grant recipients are selected through a competitive process. Once selected, the grant project manager signs an agreement form which defines the grant term, outlines eligible uses of funds (in accordance with the project budget submitted upon application), and provides information on how to administer the grant. All grant related expenses and related documentation are reviewed prior to reimbursement. Following the end of the grant term the grant project manager submits a final report to the Foundation. For scholarship awards, students are selected by scholarship committees through a competitive process.
