In recent years RCAC has increased advocacy efforts including outreach to Congressional offices regarding rural programs and policy, and advocacy at the state level including outreach to Legislators, drafting, and signing letters of support regarding Legislation. RCACs 2015 2019 Strategic Plan includes an outcome to increase impact through collaboration with local, state, and national networks with related targets including RCAC advocacy efforts will ensure that a strong western voice is heard in Washington (DC), and result in four legislative, and three administrative successes in the next five years. RCAC has a Government Affairs and Rural Policy (GARP) Team which coordinates advocacy for the organization. RCAC also has a lobbyist, Brian Augusta, who coordinates state focused advocacy and support regarding Legislation. State efforts were focused on California, Washington and New Mexico. The following is a summary of advocacy activities by RCAC October 1, 2018 September 30, 2019 based on GARP reports submitted to the RCAC Board, and Legislative Priorities outlined for our annual Legislative Fly In to Washington D.C. National Priorities RCAC conducts an annual Legislative Fly In to Washington D.C. in conjunction with our national affiliate, Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP). The purpose of the event is to visit with Congressional offices, educate Legislators about RCAC work with communities in their states, and to advocate for programs and policy that benefits rural communities throughout the West, and nationally. Rural Policy Initiatives RCAC often signs letters sponsored by other entities to increase collaboration, partnership, and strength in advocacy. RCAC drafts letters, provides comments, and conducts outreach to Legislators, Governors offices, and is actively involved with tracking program and policy issues affecting rural communities.
